About the Role
The Tariff Classification Manager is a strategic leadership role responsible for overseeing and governing tariff classification programs across complex, high-volume, and multi-jurisdictional operations. This position serves as a subject-matter authority on global tariff classification, an HTS code specialist, a trade compliance expert, and a merciology expert.
The role requires independent judgment to define objectives, establish classification strategies, and mitigate customs and compliance risks, with a focus on the Legal Regulatory Framework. The Manager partners closely with cross-functional stakeholders (customs, legal, supply chain, tax, and operations) to align classification decisions with business objectives while ensuring full regulatory compliance.
What the Candidate Will Do
• Provide strategic leadership and governance for tariff classification activities, ensuring consistent and compliant application across all operations.
• Serve as the escalation point for complex or high-risk HTS code classification determinations.
• Design, implement, and continuously improve classification processes, controls, and standard operating procedures.
• Identify automation, data analytics, and technology opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
• Use data and performance metrics to identify trends, risks, and opportunities, supporting informed decision-making at the management level.
• Lead and mentor classification analysts, fostering technical expertise, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Partner with internal stakeholders to support new project launches, supply chain changes, and strategic initiatives
• Proactively monitor HS changes and assess their impact on classification strategies and compliance posture.
• Drive a culture of business opportunity, creating opportunities in the classification matters, leading the origin inspections process on facilities, assets, and production lines to import to/from Mexico.
Basic Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• 8+ years of experience in a related field
• 2+ years of experience in leader positions related field
• In-depth knowledge of the Harmonize System
• Expert knowledge of the General Import and Export Tax Law (LIGIE) and its application within customs operations
• Strong understanding of Mexican Foreign Trade Framework and its practical application in import/export operations
• Proven capability to drive and govern multi-disciplinary projects, balancing operational execution with regulatory risk management in rapidly changing business environments
• Bilingual with advanced proficiency in Spanish and English
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree
• Basic knowledge of AI-enabled tools and automation solutions (such as data analytics platforms, document analysis, or decision-support systems) and their application to improve efficiency, consistency, and risk management in trade compliance processes.
• Ongoing professional development in customs, trade compliance, or regulatory affairs.
• Experience supporting tariff classification across multiple countries or regions, including LATAM, USMCA/US, and global operations.
• Advanced computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Tools
