We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our LinkedIn Edge Engineering team. We focus on all things Internet-Edge: traffic steering, DNS, TLS, L4/7 proxies, CDN, RUM, web performance, etc. We're entering a new era of full-stack ownership of these external and internal-facing services with a renewed focus on solving problems and building solutions through software development. Team Description

Edge team builds and operates the infrastructure that resolves, routes, and delivers all traffic between our 1 billion members and the application layer. We do this with a focus on performance, security, and reliability. As a member of this team, you will fill the mission-critical role of ensuring that our complex, web-scale systems are healthy, automated, redundant and designed to scale. You will use your background as a strong programmer with generalist operational knowledge to work on building the next generation of edge technologies from the early stages of design all the way through identifying and resolving production issues. The ideal candidate will be passionate about this unique niche of the edge domain, and will also believe that software automation is a key component to operating large-scale systems.

Responsibilities

• You will mentor other engineers, define our challenging technical culture, and help to build a fast-growing team
• You will own the technical strategy for broad or complex requirements with insightful and forward-looking approaches that go beyond the direct team and solve large open-ended problems.
• Gain deep knowledge of our complex applications
• Assist in the roll-out and ramp up of new product features and technologies to facilitate our rapid iteration and constant growth
• Develop tools to improve our ability to rapidly deploy and effectively monitor custom applications in a large-scale Linux environment.
• Function well in a fast-paced, rapidly-changing environment
• Participate in a 24x7 rotation for second-tier escalations

Basic Qualifications

• B.S. in Computer Science or other technical discipline, or related practical experience.
• 2+ years experience working with networking layers
• 8+ years experience coding in one or more programming languages like Rust, Go, Python, Perl, Ruby etc.

Preferred Qualifications

• 8+ years in a UNIX-based large-scale web operations role.
• Experience in building systems automation and server backends with Python.
• Experience with writing scalable programs in Rust/Golang/Python.
• Previous experience working with geographically-distributed coworkers.
• Strong interpersonal communication skills (including listening, speaking, and writing) and ability to work well in a diverse, team-focused environment with Developers, SREs, Network Engineers, Product Managers, etc.
• Knowledge of most of these: data structures, relational and non-relational databases, networking, Linux internals, filesystems, web architecture, and related topics.

Suggested skills

• Knowledge of DNS, TCP, TLS, HTTP
• Familiarity with reverse proxies and CDNs
• Proficient in Python or Golang
