Staff Software Development Engineer - Java

About the Role:

As a Staff Software Engineer at JioStar, you will play a key role in designing and developing the core backend systems that power our live streaming workflows. You’ll own projects end-to-end, operate with a high degree of autonomy, and help shape the architecture and future direction of our low-latency, distributed systems.

This role is ideal for engineers who are passionate about solving complex backend challenges, building resilient systems at scale, and mentoring others toward engineering excellence.

About the Team:

JioHotstar’s world-record-breaking OTT platform is available in India, the UK, Singapore, and Canada. We are home to India’s largest entertainment content catalog for the Indian diaspora in the UK. We are hiring senior engineers for our UK and international teams to develop systems that drive business growth in the country. This is a unique opportunity to work across the JioHotstar tech stack and work on the most impactful projects. You will contribute to the common stack, build frameworks to offer geography-specific differentiated features and create subscriber and business growth platform for the company.

Key Responsibilities::
• Design and build scalable, resilient microservices that drive JioStar’s live streaming infrastructure

• Lead the end-to-end delivery of complex backend projects—from technical design through deployment, monitoring, and iteration

• Write high-quality, maintainable, and well-tested code with a strong focus on fault tolerance and system reliability

• Drive architectural decisions and contribute to the long-term engineering roadmap

• Collaborate with Product Managers, Operations, and cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions

• Champion operational excellence, including performance tuning, incident management, and root cause analysis

• Mentor junior engineers, conduct code reviews and technical deep dives, and promote a culture of engineering excellence and knowledge sharing

Skills and Attributes for Success::
• Strong proficiency in Java or Golang

• Experience designing and building distributed systems at scale

• Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred, AWS Media services experience is a plus), messaging systems (e.g., Kafka), and CI/CD pipelines

• Proven ability to work autonomously in fast-paced environments, manage priorities, and deliver high-impact results

• Passion for mentoring and growing fellow engineers

• Interest in advertising technologies and optimizing systems for user and business outcomes

Preferred Education and Experience::
• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or a related field.

• 7 years of experience in backend development, with a focus on building production-grade systems.
