The Role

As a Staff Fullstack Engineer (Backend Leaning) at Farther, you'll be a key technical leader within our engineering organization, architecting and driving the development of our core platform and infrastructure. You'll shape the technical vision of our backend systems while maintaining strong fullstack capabilities, establish engineering standards, and tackle our most complex distributed systems challenges. Working with TypeScript, Bun, and CockroachDB, you'll influence technical decisions that impact our entire financial platform. This is a technical leadership role focused on engineering excellence, not people management.

Your Impact

• Drive technical architecture decisions that shape the future of our backend platform

• Lead the design and implementation of large-scale distributed systems and fullstack features across multiple projects

• Establish backend engineering standards and best practices that scale across the organization

• Tackle complex technical challenges in system design, scalability, reliability, and performance

• Guide and mentor senior engineers through complex technical decisions and fullstack implementation

• Drive technical excellence through code reviews, architecture reviews, and technical documentation

• Collaborate with engineering leadership to define technical strategy and roadmap

• Design and implement critical financial systems architecture while considering frontend implications

• Work across the fullstack to deliver complete solutions when needed

• Champion engineering excellence in distributed systems and fullstack development

• Lead technical discovery and implementation of major new platform capabilities

• Contribute to our cutting-edge, agentic-based software manufacturing pipeline

The Ideal Match

• 10+ years of backend development experience with strong fullstack capabilities and deep expertise in distributed systems

• Expert knowledge of TypeScript/JavaScript and modern backend frameworks

• Extensive experience with database design and distributed data systems (CockroachDB or similar)

• Strong proficiency in frontend technologies (React, TypeScript) with ability to architect fullstack solutions

• Strong background in financial systems architecture and implementation

• Track record of making significant technical decisions that positively impact engineering organizations

• Experience mentoring senior engineers and driving technical best practices across the stack

• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, particularly in technical documentation

• Proven ability to break down complex technical problems and guide solutions across multiple teams

• Deep understanding of cloud infrastructure (AWS), microservices architecture, and containerization

• History of successful technical leadership without direct management responsibilities

• Product-focused mindset with ability to balance technical excellence and business impact

• Experience building trading systems or financial platforms

• Background in high-availability system design

• Expertise in event-driven architectures

• Experience with technical strategy and roadmap planning

• Knowledge of financial regulatory requirements and compliance

• Track record of solving complex distributed systems challenges
