At Yahoo, Cloud Runtime Engineering, a central technology organization, is driving a company-wide cloud and infrastructure transformation. The Key-Value Store & Messaging Platform team sits at the core of this effort.

 We build and operate planet-scale distributed systems that handle millions of requests per second and manage petabytes of data globally. We’re looking for a strong Senior Software Engineer who thrives on hard systems problems, loves building at scale, and wants their work to directly impact Yahoo’s most critical, revenue-generating products.

 A Lot About You

You’ll work on platforms that directly power Yahoo Mail, Finance, Sports, Media, and Ad Platforms, where performance, reliability, and scale are non-negotiable. This is a hands-on IC role offering real ownership, deep technical challenges, and company-wide impact.

 What You’ll Do

• Design, build, and operate high-performance NoSQL and messaging platforms at massive scale

• Own globally distributed production systems, with a focus on reliability, latency, and scalability

• Drive automation-first engineering across CI/CD, testing, provisioning, scaling, and operations

• Solve complex systems problems using sound engineering judgment and modern technologies

• Participate actively in architecture, design reviews, and code reviews

• Partner with internal Yahoo teams to deliver platform capabilities that enable product innovation

• Mentor junior engineers and help raise the overall engineering bar

• Leverage AI-driven insights and intelligent automation to optimize system performance, reliability, and operational efficiency

 What You Bring

• Strong Java systems programming experience with solid testing and debugging skills

• Excellent fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems

• Proven ability to operate and improve large-scale production systems

• Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a clear ownership mindset

• Effective communication and collaboration skills across globally distributed teams

• Ability to prioritize and execute independently in a fast-paced environment

 Must Have

• BS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience

• 5+ years building Java-based services and REST APIs

• 2+ years of experience in AWS and/or GCP cloud-native environments

• Experience with large-scale distributed data systems (NoSQL, streaming, messaging) that power real-time analytics, streaming, or AI-driven applications

• Familiarity with event-driven architectures, pub/sub systems, or Apache Pulsar

• Ability to effectively use AI-powered development tools to enhance system design, debugging, testing, and code optimization

• Experience with React + Node.js is a plus

The compensation for this position ranges from $128,250.00 - $266,875.00/yr and will vary depending on factors such as your location, skills and experience.The compensation package may also include incentive compensation opportunities in the form of discretionary annual bonus or commissions.
