Role Summary

 Senior SQL Server DBA to lead the availability, performance, security, and governance of mission-critical SQL Server platforms across on-prem and cloud environments in a Finance context. You will own HA/DR, performance engineering, compliance controls, automation, and production stability for highly regulated workloads.

Key Responsibilities

Platform Operations & Reliability

• Own end-to-end administration of SQL Server 2016/2019/2022 (multi-instance, multi-environment).
• Provide L3/L4 support for high-severity production incidents, driving RCA and preventive actions.
• Manage patching, upgrades, migrations, and environment standardization with minimal downtime.

HA/DR (High Availability & Disaster Recovery)

• Design, implement and operate Always On Availability Groups, FCI, Log Shipping, Replication (as applicable).
• Define and validate RTO/RPO, conduct DR drills, and maintain runbooks and recovery evidence.

Performance Engineering

• Advanced troubleshooting: Query Store, execution plans, DMVs, Extended Events, waits/locks/deadlocks.
• Drive indexing strategy, statistics maintenance, tempdb optimization, memory/IO tuning, and capacity planning.
• Partner with application teams for release readiness and performance sign-off.

Security, Risk & Compliance (Finance)

• Implement least privilege, role-based access, auditing, password/secret handling, and segregation of duties.
• Enable encryption controls: TDE, backups encryption, key/certificate management (where applicable).
• Support compliance and audit requirements (e.g., evidence collection, access reviews, change controls).

Automation & Monitoring

• Automate DBA tasks using PowerShell + T-SQL, SQL Agent, and standard tooling.
• Implement proactive monitoring/alerting and dashboards (SQL Monitor/SSMS/SSMS reports/SCOM/Datadog/etc.).
• Build operational playbooks: SOPs, health checks, capacity reports, and on-call handover documentation.

Cloud Exposure (On-prem + Cloud)

• Support SQL Server workloads on cloud VMs and/or managed services (depending on stack).
• Plan/execute migrations and hybrid connectivity considerations, including backup/restore, replication, and DR patterns.

Experience

12+ years in SQL Server DBA 

Must-Have Skills

• 12+ years hands-on SQL Server DBA experience in production, ideally for financial/regulated systems.
• Deep expertise in Always On AG, clustering concepts, DR design, and failover operations.
• Strong in backup/recovery, including PITR, DR testing, and handling corruption scenarios.
• Expert-level performance tuning using Query Store, DMVs, XE; ability to troubleshoot at OS/storage/IO layer.
• Strong scripting with PowerShell and automation mindset.
• Solid understanding of Windows Server, networking fundamentals, and storage/IO subsystems.
• Strong operational rigor: incident mgmt, problem mgmt, change/release processes.

Good-to-Have

• Cloud SQL exposure: Azure SQL (MI/DB/VM) and/or AWS SQL on EC2/RDS for SQL Server (as applicable).
• Experience with database DevOps: DACPAC, Flyway/Liquibase/Redgate, CI/CD integration.
• Exposure to SSIS/SSRS/SSAS administration (if used).
• Security tooling and auditing frameworks commonly used in Finance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in CS/IT (or equivalent).
• Certifications (nice-to-have): Microsoft/Azure database certs, ITIL.

• Stable, secure SQL estate meeting SLA/RTO/RPO with measurable reduction in Sev1/Sev2 incidents.
• Improved performance baselines and proactive tuning outcomes.
• Audit-ready controls: access reviews, encryption, logging, evidence and change traceability.
• Mature automation and standardized runbooks across on-prem and cloud.
