Network Reliability Engineer

GRNET – National Infrastructures for Research and Technology, provides networking and cloud computing services to academic and research institutions, to educational bodies at all levels, and to agencies of the public, broader public and private sector. It is responsible for promoting and disseminating network and computing technologies and applications, as well as implementing Greece’s Digital Transformation goals. Thus, GRNET leverages the educational and research activity in the country, towards the development of applied and technological research in the fields of telecommunication networks and computing services.

GRNET develops synergies with other agencies which provide digital services in the Greek public sector, by sharing best practices and know-how on advanced information systems and it represents the national research and technological community within the European Union’s Research Infrastructures. GRNET contributes to the country’s Digital Transformation via in-depth analysis, technological studies, standard solutions and specialized know-how, serving at the same time hundreds of thousands of users on a daily basis in the strategic fields of Public Administration, Education, Research, Health and Culture.

GRNET is also the National Research and Education Network (NREN) of Greece.

GRNET has been recently involved in Digital Transformation actions, initiated by the Ministry of Digital Governance. Such actions require a whole different perspective on how we handle user needs and thus, on how we design, develop and
provide services. For this reason, we are looking for Network Reliability Engineers that will help us design, develop and run resilient, scalable and cutting-edge services based on Free and Open Source software and build a strong DevOps culture in our organization.

GRNET NRE team's main responsibility is to provide Internet Service, VPNs, and Cloud Networking Infrastructure for Public Administration, Academic and Research community, Health, and Culture institutions. The team is also responsible for the design and administration of Greek Internet Exchange (GR-IX).

GRNET NRE team's main duties and projects include:

• Data Center Networking Infrastructure and service modernization.
• Internet Feed and VPN services via access, Carrier MPLS, Core Network.
• Development and maintenance of Network Automation/Orchestration platform.
• Deployment of Network Telemetry Infrastructure.
• Development of DDoS detection/mitigation pipeline.
• Multi-tenant firewalling services.
• Administration and operation of the Greek Internet Exchange (GR-IX).
• Incident response for network failures and service disruption.

• Resources Databases: Netbox, IXP Manager
• Monitoring: SNMP, Streaming Telemetry Infrastructure (InfluxDB, Grafana)
• Alerting: Nagios, Icinga
• Flow monitoring and alerting: Akvorado
• DDoS mitigation: In-house flowspec based and commercial solutions
• Scripting languages: Python, PHP, Bash
• OS: Debian and Ubuntu GNU/Linux

What you will do:

• Participate in operating, maintaining, and designing GRNET's IP, BGP/MPLS, Data Center networks, and the Greek Internet Exchange.
• Contribute to automating network configuration generation and deployment.
• Contribute to creating, enhancing, and maintaining network management and monitoring tools.
• Create and maintain technical documentation.

Requirements:
Musts:
- Solid understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, routing protocols, OSI Layer 2/3/4)
- In depth understanding of networking technologies (BGP, ISIS, EVPN, MPLS, VXLAN)
- Working experience in ISP and/or Data Center networks

- Comfortably able to work in a UNIX/LINUX environment

Nice to have:
- Programming skills, preferably Python
- Experience with configuration management/orchestration tools (Ansible, Puppet, Terraform, etc)
- Experience in UNIX/LINUX systems administration
- Experience with Docker
