Role Overview
The Manager – Database SRE is responsible for leading and scaling the Database Site Reliability Engineering function, ensuring the reliability, security, performance, and availability of enterprise database platforms supporting critical business services.
This role combines technical leadership, people management, and platform ownership, driving the adoption of SRE principles, automation, and cloud‑native database practices across both commercial and open‑source database technologies. The Manager Database SRE sets the strategic vision for database reliability and operational excellence, while partnering closely with application, cloud, security, and architecture teams.
The role has a main focus on Oracle and SQL databases, with growing responsibility for open‑source and cloud‑native databases including PostgreSQL, MySQL, and NoSQL platforms such as Azure Cosmos DB.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & People Management
Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Lead and Senior Database SREs, encouraging a high‑performance and innovating culture.
Set clear goals, expectations, and career development plans for team members.
Promote SRE standard processes, accountability, and continuous improvement across the team.
Act as a critical issue contact for sophisticated operational and organisational challenges.
Reliability, Operations & Service Ownership
Lead the availability, resilience, and reliability SLAs/SLOs for enterprise database platforms.
Be responsible for incident response, major incident command, root cause analysis, and post‑incident reviews.
Ensure effective on-call coverage, shift rotations, and operational readiness.
Drive proactive capacity management, performance optimisation, and risk reduction initiatives.
Ensure platform operations align with business priorities and service expectations.
Database Platform Strategy & Engineering
Define and evolve the database platform strategy, standards, and roadmaps across:
Oracle and SQL Server
Open-source databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL)
NoSQL / cloud databases (Azure Cosmos DB and similar)
Ensure standardised approaches for builds, upgrades, patching, backup, recovery, and HA/DR.
Supervise complex performance tuning, scalability, and architectural reviews.
Guide teams in supporting application and development initiatives with sound database design principles.
SRE, DevOps & Automation Enablement
Champion automation-first and reliability-by-design approaches for all database services.
Supervise development of Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) and configuration management for databases.
Ensure consistent use of CI/CD pipelines for database deployments.
Define and implement observability, monitoring, and alerting standards for database platforms.
Encourage adoption of self-healing, standardisation, and continuous testing practices.
Cloud, Migration & Modernisation
Lead the design and governance of database services on Microsoft Azure.
Supervise and govern database migrations from on‑premise to Azure, including hybrid and phased approaches.
Partner with cloud, security, and architecture teams to build secure, scalable, cloud‑native database platforms.
Support modernization initiatives across RDBMS and NoSQL platforms.
Security, Risk & Compliance
Partner with IT Security and Risk teams to define and implement database security policies.
Ensure compliance with regulatory, audit, and enterprise security requirements.
Be responsible for implementation of encryption, auditing, access controls, and secrets management.
Evaluate applications and platform usage for alignment to security and compliance standards.
Required Technical Skills & Experience
Database Technologies
Strong expertise in Oracle Database platforms, including:
11g through 23ai
RAC, Grid Infrastructure, ASM/ACFS, Data Guard
Exadata, RMAN, OEM
PL/SQL, APEX
Strong solid understanding of SQL Server.
Practical experience managing and supporting:
PostgreSQL
MySQL
NoSQL / cloud databases such as Azure Cosmos DB
Deep understanding of HA/DR architectures, replication technologies, and data consistency models.
SRE / DevOps & Automation
Proven experience applying SRE principles in large, sophisticated environments.
Experience with automation and scripting (Python, Bash/KornShell, PowerShell).
Hands-on knowledge of Terraform, Ansible, and CI/CD tooling (Jenkins, GitHub/GitLab, Bitbucket, Rundeck).
Familiarity with secrets management (HashiCorp Vault).
Exposure to container and orchestration ecosystems (Docker, Kubernetes, Helm).
Cloud & Platforms
Solid experience with Microsoft Azure database services.
Exposure to AWS database platforms is beneficial.
Proven Linux platform knowledge (Red Hat Enterprise Linux; Solaris experience advantageous).
Additional Requirements
Experience leading business‑critical platforms across multi‑datacentre or multi‑region environments.
Strong collaborator management and decision‑making skills.
Ability to prioritise work, handle risk, and communicate trade‑offs clearly to senior interested parties.
Experience in finance or banking environments is highly advantageous.
Optional / Nice‑to‑Have Skills
Experience with Delphix.
Knowledge of distributed systems, data warehousing, and transaction management.
Experience with database migration and assessment tools.
