About the role
The Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and optimisation of Sigma Group’s database systems that support global events, digital platforms, and iGaming‑related services. This role ensures that data is secure, reliable, performant, and available to support analytics, AI initiatives, and mission‑critical event operations.
The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise with a proactive approach to automation, monitoring, and continuous improvement. They will play a key role in preparing the organisation’s data infrastructure for AI adoption and supporting the development of AI‑powered products and services.
Key Responsibilities
Database Administration & Maintenance
Installs, configures, and maintains relational and non‑relational database systems across production, staging, and development environments.
Monitors database performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement tuning strategies.
Manages database backups, recovery procedures, and disaster‑recovery planning.
Ensures high availability and resilience of databases supporting event platforms and iGaming systems.
Security, Compliance & Data Integrity
Implements and enforces database security policies, access controls, and encryption standards.
Ensures compliance with data‑privacy regulations and responsible‑gaming requirements where applicable.
Maintains data integrity through validation, auditing, and monitoring processes.
Collaborates with security teams to embed secure‑by‑design principles into database operations.
Automation & Operational Efficiency
Develops automated processes for database provisioning, patching, monitoring, and maintenance.
Introduces AI‑assisted tools for anomaly detection, performance optimisation, and automated diagnostics.
Supports DevOps and DataOps practices to streamline deployments and improve operational efficiency.
AI Tooling & AI‑Ready Data Support
Prepares and optimises databases for AI and machine learning workloads.
Collaborates with data scientists and data engineers to ensure data availability, quality, and structure for model training and inference.
Supports AI‑enabled products and services such as:
personalised event recommendations
predictive analytics for attendee behaviour
automated content insights for exhibitors and partners
Ensures AI‑related data pipelines and storage systems are performant and scalable.
Events & iGaming Platform Support
Ensures databases can handle high‑traffic spikes during major events, tournaments, and promotional campaigns.
Supports real‑time data ingestion and reporting for event engagement, exhibitor interactions, and iGaming‑specific metrics.
Collaborates with event operations to ensure database readiness for live and hybrid events.
Collaboration & Cross‑Functional Support
Works closely with engineering, product, data, and platform teams to support database needs across the organisation.
Provides guidance on database best practices, query optimisation, and schema design.
Supports business stakeholders with data access, reporting, and troubleshooting.
Qualifications
Key Skills & Competencies
Strong proficiency with SQL and major database platforms (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle)
Experience with NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, DynamoDB, Redis)
Knowledge of cloud‑based database services and architectures
Familiarity with AI/ML data requirements and AI‑assisted database tools
Strong understanding of performance tuning, indexing, and query optimisation
Excellent problem‑solving and analytical skills
Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non‑technical teams
Experience with event‑driven or iGaming data environments is a plus
Preferred Experience
Educated to degree level in a numerate or technical discipline, Masters preferred.
5–7+ years of technical experience in database administration, data engineering, or related fields
1–2+ years of management or mentorship experience, such as leading projects or guiding junior DBAs
Experience supporting high‑availability, high‑traffic systems in production environments
Proven track record of implementing automation and performance‑tuning strategies
Experience introducing AI tooling or supporting AI‑enabled product development
Background working with distributed or hybrid teams
