COMMUNICATION CLERK – EMERGENCY
(REGULAR PART TIME)
A regular part time Communication Clerk opportunity is available in the Emergency Department (ED) of Groves Memorial Community Hospital. This position is unionized with UNIFOR, Local 1106.
Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for facilitating effective communication and providing reception and clerical support to the Emergency Department including:
Perform administrative tasks such as the electronic management of patient admissions, transfers, and discharge processes
Order entry
Respond promptly and professionally to incoming calls (including the dispatch phone) and ensure messages are accurately relayed
Monitor incoming fax communications and ensure timely distribution to appropriate healthcare providers and flag urgent faxes (e.g physician orders, diagnostic results) for immediate attention
Processing physician orders, consultations
Monitor discrepancies between reported diagnostic imaging reports and ED physician comments and flag the scheduled ED physician to ensure follow-up
Support the transfer of ED patients to tertiary or specialized care centres by initiating and documenting Patient Transfer Authorization Centre (PTAC) numbers
Coordinating with receiving hospitals, physicians, and transport services to arrange timely and safe patient transfers
Coordinate patient bed assignment requests with the clinical resource leaders, supporting bed flow and ensuring efficient utilization of hospital beds
Maintain documentation and communication of all patient movement decisions to relevant staff
Support the repatriation and interfacility transfer of patients from other facilities by liaising with external hospitals, coordinating doctor to doctor consultations, and arranging transportation
Process patient and family requests for preferred or private accommodations according to hospital policies
Facilitate the setup, coordination, and troubleshooting of the Pediatric Tele—Resuscitation system during pediatric emergencies
Conduct the weekly maintenance of the pediatric Tele-Resuscitation system
Chart assembly, filing, requisition completion, form photocopying
Maintaining clerical supplies in the department
Assisting with daily staffing needs and call in procedures
Qualifications:
Medical terminology course required
Medical Office Administration Certificate (or related program) preferred
Minimum 1 year unit clerk experience within the last three (3) years with preference being given to those with Emergency experience.
Skilled in computer applications including Microsoft (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Meditech programs (ADT and Order Entry an asset)
Excellent clerical proficiency
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
Strong organizational and time management expertise to cope in a challenging and often stressful environment
Documented dependability (excellent attendance record)
Satisfactory performance and attendance required
Satisfactory Reference Checks required prior to start date
Must provide a Police Vulnerable Sector Check
Must complete a Pre-Employment Health Assessment prior to being hired
Hours of Work: The successful candidate must be available to work all assigned shifts as scheduled by the hospital, including days, nights, weekends, and statutory holidays.
Current shifts include:
11.25-hour shifts: Days (0730–1930) and Nights (1930–0730)
7.5-hour shifts: 1000–1800
Salary: $25.31 - $27.04 per hour
