Child Care Worker and Activities Coordinator

The Native Women's Shelter of Montreal (NWSM) is seeking a Child Care and Activities Coordinator in order to provide childcare services and programming that are culturally grounded and based on a trauma-informed approach for children staying at the shelter.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Executive Director and the supervision Programming Coordinator, the Childcare and Activities Coordinator will be responsible for the following tasks:

Provide developmentally appropriate and culturally relevant childcare services to families staying at the shelter (primarily for children aged 0 to 8, occasionally including older children and adolescents).

Supervise and ensure the safety of children, including during outings.

In collaboration with the Program Coordinator, develop culturally relevant activities that respond to children’s needs and align with programming offered to parents.

Facilitate developmentally appropriate and culturally grounded activities (games, crafts, reading, sharing circles, outings, etc.).

Provide active listening and intervene in crisis situations as needed.

Offer homework support as required (direct assistance and/or communication with external services).

Create and maintain a safe environment within the residence.

Participate in weekly case management meetings to share relevant updates.

Meet weekly with the Programming Coordinator to plan activities and the childcare schedule.

Collaborate closely with the family care team to meet the needs of families staying at the shelter.

Develop the shelter’s family room into a multifunctional space for children.

Participate in the annual healing retreat (usually 5 days in the summer, dates to be confirmed) to provide childcare support.

Perform any other related duties as requested by the Programming Coordinator.

Education

College diploma (DEC) or university degree in social work, social service techniques, early childhood education, Indigenous studies, or a related field.

Experience

Minimum of 1 to 2 years of experience working with children and youth, ideally in a community, homelessness, or intervention context.

Experience in crisis intervention and trauma-informed approaches.

Strong knowledge of child development from an Indigenous cultural perspective.

Additional Requirements

Proficiency in French and English.

Knowledge of an Indigenous language (an asset).

Valid first aid certification.

Criminal record and vulnerable sector check prior to hiring.

Ability to manage stressful situations.

Le Foyer pour Femmes Autochtones de Montréal (FFAM) est à la recherche d’un(e) intervenant(e) expérimenté(e) en garde d’enfants et coordination des activités afin d’offrir des services de garde et une programmation culturellement ancrés et fondés sur une approche sensible aux traumatismes pour les enfants hébergés au foyer.

Tâches et Responsabilités
Sous l’autorité de la Directrice Exécutive et sous la supervision de la Coordonnatrice à la Programmation, la personne titulaire du poste est responsable de:

Offrir des services de garde adaptés au développement et culturellement pertinents aux familles hébergées (principalement pour les enfants de 0 à 8 ans, incluant parfois des enfants plus âgés et des adolescent(e)s).

Superviser et assurer la sécurité des enfants, y compris lors des sorties.

En collaboration avec la coordonnatrice à la programmation, développer des activités culturellement pertinentes répondant aux besoins des enfants et cohérentes avec la programmation offerte aux parents.

Animer des activités adaptées au développement et à la culture (jeux, bricolages, lecture, cercles de partage, sorties, etc.).

Offrir de l’écoute active et intervenir en situation de crise au besoin.

Apporter un soutien aux devoirs, au besoin (aide directe et/ou communication avec des services externes).

Créer et maintenir un environnement sécuritaire au sein de la résidence.

Participer aux rencontres hebdomadaires de gestion de cas afin de partager les mises à jour pertinentes.

Rencontrer hebdomadairement la coordonnatrice à la programmation pour planifier les activités et l’horaire de garde.

Collaborer étroitement avec l’équipe de soins familiaux afin de répondre aux besoins des familles hébergées.

Développer la salle familiale du refuge en espace multifonctionnel pour les enfants.

Participer à la retraite annuelle de guérison (habituellement 5 jours en été, dates à confirmer) afin d’offrir un soutien en garde d’enfants.

Effectuer toute autre tâche connexe demandée par la coordonnatrice à la programmation.

Formation

Diplôme d’études collégiales (DEC) ou diplôme universitaire en travail social, techniques de travail social, éducation à l’enfance, études autochtones ou domaine connexe.

Expérience

Minimum de 1 à 2 ans d’expérience auprès d’enfants et de jeunes, idéalement en contexte communautaire, d’itinérance ou d’intervention.

Expérience en intervention de crise et en approche sensible aux traumatismes.

Bonne connaissance du développement de l’enfant dans une perspective culturelle autochtone.

Autres Exigences

Maîtrise du français et de l’anglais.

Connaissance d’une langue autochtone (atout).

Certification valide en premiers soins.

Vérification des antécédents judiciaires et du secteur vulnérable avant l'embauche.
