Job Description
WM New Zealand Limited is New Zealand's leading resource recovery, recycling, and waste management, provider. We’re committed to safeguarding our beautiful environment through sustainable management of our valuable resources. Put simply, sustainability is what we do.
We’re looking for a high‑performing Business Development Manager to grow and retain our tyre collection and recovery services across the South Island.
Based in Christchurch, this role involves regular travel across the South Island (typically 1–2 weeks per month) to both win new customers and build durable, long‑term relationships with existing tyre customers.
This is a hunter‑led role with a strong retention focus. You’ll own your customer base end‑to‑end — building a target list, creating demand, closing new agreements, and ensuring customers continue to see value in partnering with WM over the long term. The emphasis is on repeat business, service stickiness, and sustainable revenue growth, not one‑off wins.
What success looks like: a healthy, well-qualified pipeline; consistent conversion of priority pursuits; strong internal deal leadership; and new customers onboarded smoothly with clear value delivered from day one.
You’ll thrive if you’re a high-performing, consultative closer who earns trust quickly, challenges constructively, and takes full ownership from first conversation to signed agreement.
Key Responsibilities
You’ll own the full business development cycle - from prospecting to close and onboarding and partnering across WM to deliver high-value, profitable solutions.
• Win new tyre collection and recovery business across the South Island, spanning large commercial customers and growth‑oriented SMEs.
• Develop and execute a clear territory and customer plan, balancing new business acquisition with retention and account growth.
• Build long‑term relationships with customers, acting as a trusted commercial partner and first point of contact.
• Maintain disciplined pipeline management, forecasting and activity tracking in Salesforce.
• Manage seamless onboarding, renewals, and handovers to ensure strong customer experience and retention.
• Represent WM at relevant industry events, supplier forums and customer meetings to strengthen our presence in the tyre recovery market.
• Identify upsell, cross‑sell and service improvement opportunities within existing accounts.
About you
You’re a commercially sharp, high-performing business development professional with a track record of winning new customers and building enduring partnerships. You’re confident navigating complex stakeholder environments and influencing senior decision-makers.
·  Experience in business development or consultative sales within a service‑based or industrial environment.
·  Proven success winning new business and retaining / growing customer relationships.
·  Experience selling route‑based or logistics‑enabled services (waste, recycling, transport, industrial services or similar preferred).
·  Strong commercial acumen with confident negotiation and proposal skills.
·  Comfortable engaging with operational, procurement and senior decision‑makers.
·  Relationship‑oriented, but outcomes‑focused — able to challenge constructively
·  High energy, resilient, and self‑directed — comfortable managing your own territory and travel.
·  Full New Zealand driver’s licence and flexibility for regular South Island travel.
