POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Building Automation Systems Intern will support the Building Automation Systems (BAS) team with system checkout, startup assistance, device verification, documentation, and troubleshooting support after installation has been completed by electrical contractors. This internship is designed to provide hands-on exposure to BAS field operations, including control systems, HVAC equipment integration, commissioning support, and system diagnostics. The intern will work under the guidance of experienced Systems Technicians and Engineers to develop technical knowledge of building automation systems and controls.
RESPONSIBLITIES/DUTIES:
These responsibilities generally describe the nature of the position and may not be all inclusive:
System Checkout & Startup Support:
Assist with point-to-point checkout of BAS devices and control points
Support verification of device addressing, communication, and signal integrity
Help identify installation discrepancies and report findings to senior technicians
Observe and assist with bringing systems online per project documentation
Programming & Functional Testing Support:
Assist with loading controller programs and firmware under supervision
Support functional testing and sequence verification
Learn BAS programming standards and controller configuration processes
Assist during commissioning activities and performance testing
Diagnostics & Troubleshooting Assistance:
Support troubleshooting of control system and HVAC-related issues
Observe root cause analysis procedures
Assist in documenting system issues and corrective actions
Documentation & Coordination:
Help maintain accurate service records and startup documentation
Assist with as-built documentation updates
Coordinate with project managers, technicians, and field staff as needed
Participate in project meetings when applicable
Professional Development:
Gain exposure to BAS platforms, industrial protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus), and field devices
Develop understanding of HVAC systems and control strategies
Learn safety standards and jobsite protocols
Receive mentorship from experienced technicians and engineers
SKILLS/ABILITES:
Strong interest in automation, controls, or mechanical/electrical systems
Basic understanding of electrical or mechanical principles preferred
Ability to read and interpret basic wiring diagrams and plans (preferred)
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
Willingness to learn in a hands-on environment
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office
Strong communication skills
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Currently pursuing an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls, Engineering Technology, or related technical field
Prior technical, construction, or field experience a plus (not required)
Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to project sites
