Job Description

Arlington Heights Memorial Library seeks an enthusiastic Tween Librarian to join our dynamic Youth Services team and collaboratively develop and deliver creative, hands-on, relevant, and adaptive services for our diverse tweens (grades 4-6) and their families.   

In this position, you will connect with our tween customers and their caregivers directly in Kids' World. At the desk, you will provide reference, readers’ advisory, resources for homework, and answers to a variety of quirky questions. In the tween space and during programs, you will present opportunities to learn, make, hang out and meet new friends. As Tween Librarian, you will work with staff within and beyond the Youth Services department, as well as connecting with schools and community organizations to help steer library services for our community’s tweens. We are looking for someone who can be an advocate for tweens wherever they are. 

 

As Tween Librarian you will: 

Work regular desk shifts to provide reference/readers’ advisory services and monitor youth areas, Kids’ World and the Hub (teen space)  

Maintain displays and interactive elements in the tween space 

Deliver off-site outreach services at local schools and organizations serving tweens 

Plan and present monthly programs for tween audiences and their caregivers 

Collaborate with Youth Services staff to provide developmentally appropriate services for tweens 

Contribute to departmental and library-wide projects, programs, and committee work 

Participate in professional activities to contribute to the wider profession 

 

Requirements & Skills: 

One to three years of experience in a library or customer service setting 

Experience in developing and presenting interactive programming for individuals and group audiences 

Knowledge of adolescent development and learning needs 

Interest in working with Youth Services audiences (ages 0-18) 

Enthusiasm and knowledge regarding youth literature  

 

The preferred candidate must also demonstrate ability to work effectively with staff and customers in alignment with Our Culture and IDEA.

Education:  Master of Library Science required.

  

Hours and Scheduling:   Full time 37.5 hours per week. Primarily Monday-Friday weekdays, with 1-2 evening shifts weekly and weekend shift rotations. Must be flexible for scheduling to present programs, support events, and serve at public service points.  

 

Salary and Benefits: 

Annual salary starting at $53,078–$66,347 depending on qualifications. 

 

Benefits: Benefits include health, dental & vision insurance, 4 weeks vacation plus personal leave, 13 paid holidays, Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) pension plan and availability of 457/Roth savings plan and other optional benefits such as pet insurance & identity theft protection.
