Since 2014, the Cabot Square Project has been initiated by the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal  (NWSM) in partnership with the Borough Ville-Marie and the YMCA Homelessness Assistance in the downtown borough. This project aims to improve the feeling of safety and wellbeing among all community members, and encourage positive cohabitation in Cabot Square and the surrounding areas with a team of community workers using various tools to support the vulnerable homeless population and residents. 

The team is currently seeking a Youth Outreach Worker who will be primarily involved in working with the  unhoused Indigenous population in the Cabot Square area, and collaborating closely with the Cabot Square Mediators and the Iskweu Coordinator, promoting safety and increasing access to resources.

TYPE OF POSITION:

40 hours per week (full-time)

SCHEDULE:

12:00 - 20:00 ( Wednesday - Sunday)

LOCATION:

Square Cabot - Surrounding areas

SALARY:

$62,000 - 62,400

PROBATION:
Three (3) month probation period, after which an evaluation will be conducted.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the authority of the Executive Director, and the supervision of the Outreach Team Manager, the Cabot Square Youth Outreach Worker is responsible for the following tasks:

Individual Support and Outreach (Prevention, Intervention, Safety)

Maintain presence at Cabot Square (near Atwater metro station) and surrounding areas to support the vulnerable population and those at risk of /experiencing homelessness in order to build trusting relationships; 

Promote the safety of individuals who frequent Cabot Square rooted in a harm reduction and culturally relevant approach for Indigenous community members; 

Collaborate with the Mediator team in responding to emergencies and crisis situations; 

Identify and engage in outreach with youth aging/aged out of care (DYP) experiencing/at risk of homelessness and exploitation, building trust and providing support navigating systems, understanding their rights, and sourcing resources (financial, housing, et al.) available to them;

Understand and incorporate approaches and activities for gang prevention;

Provide intervention support, accompaniment, and referrals when appropriate to Indigenous Women and gender-diverse individuals navigating gender-based and targeted violence (e.g. sexual violence, exploitation, and trafficking), and to promote support re sexual and reproductive health, working collaboratively with the Iskweu Coordinator.

Create a resource list of youth related services, be it housing, support services and education.

Community & Advocacy

Shadow the Iskweu coordinator to learn about her project and clients.  Support families & community members navigating MMIWG2S+ or reporting a missing person during Iskweu Coordinator’s absence;

Support the Iskweu Coordinator in outreach and awareness-raising activities when schedule permits;

Establish and maintain collaboration with the SPVM and STM personnel as needed to promote harm reduction in and around Cabot Square;

Establish and maintain collaboration with community resources and partners.

Administration and Record Keeping

Write case/intervention notes on Apricot, ensuring they are up to date by the end of subsequent shift;

Write Incident reports on Apricot by the end of the next work day for incidents involving emergency services or barriers to accessing services that prompt complaints;

Participate in team meetings, case management, clinical discussions, and training; 

Enter data needed for statistics according to deadlines provided.

Other duties as required by the Executive Director.

Education:

College diploma (DEC) or university degree in Social Work, Youth and Adult Correctional Intervention, Special Care Counselling, Social Services, Indigenous Studies, or a related field.

Experience:

Minimum 1–2 years of experience in community outreach, street work, youth work, or homelessness/intervention environment.

Experience working with Indigenous populations, people experiencing homelessness, and individuals with complex trauma or mental health/substance use challenges.

Experience with harm reduction, crisis intervention, and trauma-informed practices.

Other Requirements:

Bilingual: spoken/written French and English

Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, histories, and realities, including intergenerational trauma and systemic barriers.

Understanding of gender-based violence and exploitation issues.

A valid driver’s license is an asset 

CPR/First Aid and non-violent crisis intervention certifications are assets.

Must be comfortable working outdoors year-round in Cabot Square and surrounding areas.
