Reports To:     Wildlife Biologist III (Vegetation Ecologist); Wildlife Program Manager

Department:   Department of Natural Resources

Location:        Wellpinit, WA

Rate of Pay:   $26.73 - $30.00; DOE

Status:            Full-Time, Hourly

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Invasive Species Biologist is responsible for developing and implementing invasive species management projects on the Spokane Indian Reservation, including invasive species population monitoring, noxious weed management, revegetation, project monitoring, and project reporting.

 

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Implement the Integrated Weed Management Plan (IWMP) to improve wildlife habitat across the Spokane Indian Reservation

Develop and implement noxious weed control activities for cover crop fields, other planted areas, natural areas, and disturbed sites.

Maintain records of chemical, biological, and mechanical control applications

Collect and input field data and spatial data and conduct relevant analyses to inform project decisions.

Maintain equipment such as tractors, chainsaws, ATV, side by side, tractor implements, vehicles & etc.

Train technical staff on chemical weed control and related worker protection standards

Communicate project progress and needs to supervisors

Participate with the Integrated Resource Management Plan (IRMP) Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) to review project proposals on the reservation.

Other duties as assigned

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Knowledge of plant and animal communities, and working knowledge of plant and weed identification

Must possess a basic first aid/CPR card or able to obtain one within 60 days of hire.

Must be able to work independently, in rugged terrain, in remote areas.

Ability and knowledge to work safely and efficiently around agricultural and spraying equipment, ATV’s and chainsaws.

Experience in the use and application of standard computer programs and associated software.

Ability to communicate effectively with verbal and written instructions and work with co-workers, tribal programs, general public, and other agencies.

Must be able to operate GPS and mapping tools

Must be able to work with diverse cultural, professional, and technical interdisciplinary teams.

Must be able to safely operate ATV and 4-wheel drive vehicles.

Must be in excellent physical condition and be able to work in inclement weather conditions and rough terrain, to include carrying 30+ pounds routinely.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the education and/or experience, and demonstrated skills required.

Bachelor’s degree in a natural resource related field AND 1 year experience related to habitat restoration, invasive species control, or other natural resource management

Valid Washington State Driver’s License, reliable transportation, and be tribally insurable.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Wildland Fire Certified

CDL or willingness to obtain

Current Pesticide Applicators License from Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) or from another state.

Experience beyond the minimum qualifications related to invasive species control or other natural resource management

 

CERTIFICATION(s) REQUIRED:

Must obtain Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) Pesticide Applicators License within 90 days of hire

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

0-2 hours per shift: Normal Office - Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.

5-8 hours per shift: Occasional Exposure - Occasional exposure to objectionable conditions or variations such as those found in variable weather conditions or light industrial settings.

 0-2 hours per shift: Regular Exposure - Regular exposure to unfavorable environments such as weather, body fluids, toxic laboratory and industrial chemicals, or confined, dirty and noisy locations. Employees may be required to use personal protective equipment such as masks, coats, gowns, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields.

Rarely: High Risks - The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress that require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., working at great heights under extreme outdoor weather conditions, subject to possible physical attack or mob conditions, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Moderate - The position requires moderate physical exertion such as long periods of standing, repetitively lifting lightweight objects with frequent bending or stooping, recurring lifting of moderately heavy items such as computer, printers or record boxes. Occasionally lifts heavy objects (over 50 pounds).  The position requires average agility and dexterity.

Tribal Preference - Tribal Preference grants preference in employment to qualified enrolled Spokane Tribal Citizens, Spouses of Spokane Tribal Citizens, First Line Descendants of Spokane Tribal Citizens, and Citizens of other Tribes and Other Applicants, in that order.
