The Opportunity
The Wastewater Operator is responsible for the general operation and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Plants and corresponding Collections Systems for the Municipality, as well as ensuring compliance with Provincial Legislation and town policies for the protection of public health and safety.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Provides the operation and maintenance for two (2) extended aeration type treatment plants including approximately one hundred and ten (110) kilometres of collections system and numerous pumping stations.
Completes daily inspections of treatment and collection facilities with concern for operational requirements such as:
Inspections of operational equipment and recording pertinent data.
Monitoring and recording characteristics and equipment data daily, pertaining to treatment and collection operations.
Monitoring and recording pump rates, flows, generator status and system efficiencies.
Monitoring treatment effectiveness and makes appropriate process changes as required.
Diagnosing treatment deficiencies and applies appropriate testing formulas and practises associated with biological and mechanical processes.
Applying procedures in respective O&M manuals and manufacturers literature for all equipment maintenance and repairs.
Collecting and submitting samples to appropriate laboratories for analysis, as required by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks Environmental Compliance Approval (MECP ECA).
Performing the required in house analysis and record keeping in conformance with MECP ECA.
Maintaining log books in a professional manner to be kept on site on a daily basis.
Inputting various data collected daily into common database maintained off site for review and reporting by Superintendent.
Maintaining buildings and grounds in a clean, neat and safe condition.
Performs maintenance and repairs for, and flushing of, existing sewer mains, laterals, manholes, valves, and other sewer system appurtenances as required.
Ensures all facility equipment, pumps, wet/dry wells and diesel generators are maintained in good operational condition. Tests diesel generators when required.
Performs utility locates of collection system piping as required, utilizes engineering drawings, digital drawings and electronic locating equipment, as required by internal/external agencies, in order to avoid damage to existing underground plant or service disruption.
Assists contractors while performing work for the InnServices, ensuring all safety procedures are being followed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Provides coordination for hauling LysteGro off site, in collaboration with Lystek and Lystek’s contractor(s). If required, provides coordination for biosolids application with contracted agencies ensuring compliance with the Nutrient Management Act and MECP ECA requirements/guidelines.
Is a proactive and engaged member of the Wastewater Services team. Makes and lives up to commitments and follows up with team members to ensure satisfaction of commitments made to others.
Maintains effective and co-operative liaison, and exchanges information, with other staff, municipalities, government agencies, other organizations, members of the public, etc.; deals with all contacts in a courteous, friendly and efficient manner to promote a high standard of customer service and public relations at all times
Maintains assigned vehicles, tools and all other departmental equipment in good operating condition.
Requires mandatory participation in overtime and on-call after hours and weekend work performed as required.
Acts as ORO in the absence of Supervisor and when requested.
Participates in training courses, seminars and or workshops deemed necessary to qualify for operating licenses and performing daily duties. Participates in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) training activities and utilizes PPE as required for safe work practice.
Performs other duties as may be assigned in accordance with corporate objectives.

Qualifications & Core Capabilities:
Community College diploma in a related field (such as; Civil Engineering, Water/Wastewater or Environmental studies) or equivalent related experience.
First Aid/CPR and Confined Space Entry Certification
Valid Class ‘G’ Driver’s license and reliable vehicle to use on corporate business
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a wastewater collection and wastewater treatment environment. MECP Class ІII (3) Certification required in Wastewater Treatment and MECP Class ІI (2) Certification Wastewater Collection.
Nutrient management training, experience in bio-solids application, small systems operation, wastewater stabilization ponds and other microbiological training an asset.
Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Nutrient Management Act (NMA), MECP regulatory and reporting requirements for wastewater plant/infrastructure/operations/licenses, MECP ECAs plus any other legislation and regulatory requirements relevant to the duties.
Availability to attend evening meetings or other events, if necessary.
