Northleaf’s Capital Markets
The Capital Markets group is responsible for spearheading all of Northleaf’s relationships with various banks, lenders and hedging providers. We also manage the fund finance needs of the entire firm, working closely with many functional groups within Northleaf to ensure each fund’s liquidity and leverage needs are met.
Northleaf is currently recruiting for a senior leader to join their Capital Markets team. This position is based in Northleaf’ s Toronto office and reports to the Managing Director, Capital Markets.
The successful candidate will help design, lead and scale the firm’s currency risk management program across the corporate entity and multi‑currency funds/mandates. This individual will own policy, strategy and execution—sophisticating our approach to foreign exchange risk, strengthening governance and reporting, and ensuring efficient, well‑controlled operations that support our global growth.
This posting is a high‑visibility, new role with regular interaction with the Investment Committee, Portfolio Strategy & Analytics, Deal teams, Investor Operations, Product and Distribution, Legal/Compliance and our banking counterparties.
Accountabilities
Strategy, Policy & Governance
Redesign and own Northleaf’s FX Risk Policy covering corporate, fund‑level and share‑class/NAV hedging; collaborate with team members to determine appropriate risk appetite, target/trigger thresholds, eligible instruments and control framework.
Build a comprehensive hedging strategy that aligns with corporate/fund cash flow profiles, fee currencies and investor base; set playbooks for balance‑sheet, cash‑flow and NAV hedging across PE, PC and Infrastructure.
Prepare materials for Executive/Investment/Risk Committees; maintain policy documentation, annual reviews and exception management.
Hedging Program Design & Execution
Architect corporate and portfolio‑level hedge programs (rolling forwards, swaps, options where appropriate) including NAV/share‑class hedging and deal‑level hedging.
Conduct scenario analysis and risk reporting.
Lead relationship development and execution with banking partners to optimize price, liquidity and best‑execution/TCA; manage allocations across funds and accounts.
Oversee counterparty management (ISDA/CSA negotiations, UMR/margin, eligibility schedules) in partnership with Legal and Compliance; optimize collateral terms and sources.
Risk, Reporting & Analytics
Implement robust risk measurement (VaR/sensitivity, stress/scenario analysis, back‑testing) and performance attribution of hedging vs. policy targets.
Build executive‑ready dashboards for P&L, cost‑of‑carry, slippage/TCA, hedge effectiveness, residual risk and capital/LIQ implications.
Cash Optimization and Liquidity
Collaborate with Liquidity team on cash forecasting and liquidity management.
Manage and optimize excess cash balances.
Implement cash pooling/concentration structures.
Coordinate with Investment and Portfolio Strategy and Analytics team on short-term investments.
Operations, Technology, Controls
Drive standardization and automation in FX processes.
Enhance treasury systems and controls in concert with cash management and corporate finance groups.
Improve documentation and internal workflows.
Cross Functional Stakeholder Leadership and Relationship Management
Be the firm’s subject‑matter expert on FX for investment teams and investor relations as well as an external resource for investors / prospects; contribute to product design for new mandates/share classes.
Participate in key FX provider and treasury relationships externally across our global platform of partners.
Monitor performance and pricing across these partners.
Qualifications
10+ years of progressive FX/treasury/market risk experience in asset management, pension/sovereign, private markets or global corporate treasury, capital markets or currency desks; multi fund, multi jurisdiction experience strongly preferred.
Demonstrated leadership of enterprise-wide hedging programs (policy through execution) with hands on derivatives expertise: forwards/NDFs, FX swaps, options.
Deep understanding of NAV and share class hedging, cash flow and balance sheet hedging, and the nuances across private equity, private credit and infrastructure fund structures.
Strong data and analytics orientation: exposure modeling, hedge ratio design, sensitivity/attribution and performance reporting; proficiency in Excel; Python/SQL helpful.
Excellent stakeholder management, communication and executive level presentation skills; ability to translate technical topics into clear decisions.
Relevant credentials (CFA, FRM, PRM, CTP) an asset; bachelor’s degree required, graduate degree preferred.
A self-starter who is analytical and forward thinking with the ability to drill down into data and issues.
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills (verbal and written) with the ability to liaise with all levels of individuals both internally and externally.
