Job Description
The Director of Operations – Vertical Construction is responsible for leading and optimizing all construction operations related to vertical projects. This role oversees project execution from preconstruction through closeout, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
Lead day-to-day construction operations across multiple vertical construction projects
Standardize processes, workflows, and best practices across project teams
Ensure alignment between estimating, preconstruction, project management, and field operations
Project Oversight
Provide executive oversight for schedules, budgets, and risk management
Review project forecasts, cost reports, change orders, and margin performance
Support resolution of complex project issues (schedule delays, cost overruns, subcontractor disputes)
Team Leadership & Development
Directly manage Project Executives, Senior Project Managers, and/or Construction Managers
Mentor and develop leadership talent within operations
Recruit, onboard, and retain top construction management professionals
Financial & Performance Management
Accountable for operational profitability and margin performance
Partner with finance on forecasting, cash flow, and cost controls
Drive continuous improvement to reduce rework, claims, and inefficiencies
Safety, Quality & Compliance
Champion company-wide safety culture and ensure OSHA compliance
Oversee QA/QC programs to meet contractual and regulatory standards
Ensure adherence to local, state, and federal construction regulations
Client & Stakeholder Relations
Serve as an executive point of contact for key owners, developers, and partners
Support business development efforts and client retention
Participate in major pursuits, interviews, and contract negotiations
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related field
10–15+ years of experience in vertical construction operations
Proven leadership experience managing multiple large-scale projects
Strong financial acumen and project controls expertise
Deep knowledge of construction contracts (GMP, Lump Sum, CM at Risk)
Preferred
Experience with projects $25M–$200M+
Background with self-perform or subcontractor-heavy models
Professional certifications (PMP, CCM, LEED) a plus
