McCall Thomas Engineering Company, Inc. is seeking an experienced full-time Utility Mapping Tech for work in the Newberry, SC area.
Job location: project locations may change and require travel
Work schedule: M-F

The Utility Mapping Technician is responsible for identifying, locating, and marking underground utilities to prevent damage during excavation activities. This role ensures the safety of personnel, protection of infrastructure, and compliance with regulatory requirements through accurate fieldwork, documentation, and coordination with contractors.
Core Responsibilities
Utility Locating & Marking
Utilize electromagnetic locators, GPR, and other detection equipment to identify underground facilities. Accurately mark utilities using industry-standard paint and flags.
Blueprint & Site Plan Interpretation
Review and interpret utility maps, construction drawings, and site plans to support accurate locating and field decision-making.
Documentation & Reporting
Use mobile devices to document completed work, capture site photographs, and submit required “positive response” records in accordance with company and regulatory standards.
Safety & Compliance:
Adhere to all safety protocols, including proper traffic control, PPE usage, and safe driving practices.
Maintain awareness of environmental and job site hazards.
Contractor Coordination
Meet with contractors on-site to communicate locate results, clarify markings, and ensure understanding prior to excavation.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Physical Capability
Ability to walk extended distances, work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and lift up to 80 lbs.
Technical Aptitude
Ability to learn and operate electronic locating equipment, GPS systems, and mobile data collection tools.
Documentation Skills
Basic computer proficiency with the ability to accurately record, interpret, and maintain job data.
Driving Requirements
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Work Environment
Field-Based Role
Primarily outdoor work in a variety of environments, including construction sites, roadways, and undeveloped terrain.
Exposure to Hazards
Regular exposure to traffic, noise, dust, fumes, and potential electrical hazards.
Independent Work Structure
Operates with a high degree of independence, requiring initiative, accountability, and time management.

Probing Rods and Hand Tools (e.g., shovels)

What Will You Need
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
High school diploma
Eligibility to work in the US without sponsorship (required)
Prior fiber construction or utility electrical inspection experience preferred
