CONSUMER & BUSINESS REPORTER
Role Overview
The Consumer & Business Reporter writes fast, engaging and authoritative journalism across consumer, business, personal finance and real estate — always with a sharp focus on how companies, markets and economic shifts affect everyday Americans.
The role reports to the Consumer Editor and Deputy Consumer Editor. The department prides itself on nurturing, developing and improving journalistic talent, offering close editing, feedback and clear progression.
Key Responsibilities
• Pitch and write compelling consumer and business stories for DailyMail.com, including breaking news, data-led reporting and case-study-driven features
• Contribute to Mail+ by producing original angles, explainers and in-depth personal finance coverage
• Cover fast-moving news accurately under tight deadlines
• Build and develop a growing network of sources across sectors such as retail, banking, housing, travel and dining
• Translate complex business and financial information into clear, conversational and engaging copy
• Analyze data — including housing prices, company filings and consumer trends — to identify strong story angles
• Work closely with the picture desk to select eye-catching imagery and commission graphics
• Track story performance and learn from audience data to improve pitches, headlines and formats
Skills and Experience
• Strong understanding of how US businesses operate and how they affect consumers’ daily lives
• Clear interest in personal finance and the real-world consequences of economic decisions
• Passion for the Daily Mail brand, editorial voice and global audience
• At least five years’ journalism experience
• Working knowledge of SEO, or a strong willingness to learn quickly
• Collaborative, curious and open to feedback
• Enthusiasm for consumer, money, business and real estate journalism
This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes attendance in the office five days a week.
Salary range - $65,000-$80,000
