Position Summary
Freedom Behavioral Hospital of Greenville is seeking a detail-oriented and organized Unit Secretary to support the nursing department. This role serves as a critical communication hub between nursing staff, patients, families, and providers.
The Unit Secretary provides administrative, clerical, and coordination support to ensure efficient unit operations, accurate patient records, and timely communication across departments.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as liaison between nursing staff, patients, families, and providers
Perform receptionist duties including answering phones and greeting visitors
Maintain and organize patient medical records and charts
Enter admissions, discharges, and patient data into the EHR system
Assist with coordinating patient transport, labs, radiology, and dietary needs
Monitor and report discrepancies in patient records and census
Support Director of Nursing with administrative reporting (incident reports, staffing, etc.)
Ensure availability of forms, supplies, and office equipment
Assist nursing staff with communication, documentation, and workflow coordination
Participate in unit meetings and support implementation of policies and procedures
Provide support during medical rounds and assist with order entry as needed
Perform general clerical duties (faxing, copying, emailing)
Maintain confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA and hospital policies
Qualifications
Education:
High School Diploma or GED required
Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
Experience:
Minimum 1 year of clerical, receptionist, or healthcare experience preferred
Prior hospital or behavioral health experience strongly preferred
Skills & Competencies
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities
Attention to detail and accuracy in documentation
Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-interruption environment
Basic computer and data entry skills
Ability to follow policies, procedures, and instructions
Basic understanding of medical and psychiatric conditions
Certifications / Requirements
Valid Driver’s License or Government ID
CPR Certification (or ability to obtain)
Behavioral Management Training (provided if needed)
TB test required upon hire and annually
Work Environment
Behavioral health hospital setting
Moderate to high noise level
Fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions
Exposure to psychiatric patients in acute care settings
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand/walk for extended periods
Ability to sit for long periods (4+ hours)
Ability to lift at least 10 lbs
Ability to hear alarms, phones, and communicate clearly
