Position Summary
The Underground Pipe Layer is responsible for the installation, alignment, and assembly of underground piping systems including water, sewer, and storm drainage. This role requires experience working in trench environments, reading grade stakes and plans, and ensuring pipe installation meets project specifications, safety standards, and quality requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Install underground utility piping including water, sanitary sewer, and storm systems
Read and interpret plans, blueprints, grade stakes, and cut sheets
Set and check pipe grade and alignment using lasers, levels, and grade rods
Prepare trenches, including bedding, backfill, and compaction support
Direct equipment operators during excavation, pipe placement, and backfilling
Ensure proper installation of fittings, valves, hydrants, manholes, and structures
Perform tie-ins to existing systems and ensure proper connections
Identify and maintain proper trench safety and shoring requirements
Conduct visual inspections to ensure pipe integrity and proper installation
Maintain clean and organized jobsite conditions
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
3–5 years of experience in underground utility construction
Strong understanding of pipe installation methods, trenching, and grade control
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
Experience working around heavy equipment in active jobsite environments
Knowledge of OSHA safety standards related to excavation and trenching
Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions
Preferred Skills
Experience with laser levels and grade checking equipment
Familiarity with different pipe materials (PVC, HDPE, ductile iron, RCP, etc.)
Ability to lead or mentor less experienced crew members
Basic rigging and signaling knowledge
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift 50+ lbs regularly
Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, and working in trenches
Ability to work long hours, including occasional weekends
