Job Description

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

The Office of Trials is seeking motivated and detail-oriented interns to support the prosecution of internal disciplinary matters within the uniform force of the Department of Corrections (DOC). This division plays a crucial role in managing the trials process, ensuring thorough oversight of staff misconduct allegations within the department. The intern will gain valuable experience and insight into the disciplinary process while contributing to the day-to-day operations of disciplinary trials.
- Assist attorneys and support staff throughout all phases of the disciplinary process, including scheduling interviews and processing forms.
- Take detailed notes during conferences, trials, and meetings to ensure accurate documentation of proceedings.
- Support the preparation of discovery materials, including gathering and organizing relevant documents for outside counsel.
- Conduct legal research as needed to assist in case preparation for pre-trial conferences and trials.
-Help interview witnesses to gather information and insights pertinent to trial preparation.
-Prepare visual aids and other materials to support case presentations during trials.
-Learn about the Department of Corrections’ overall mission, the disciplinary process, and the aims of the Nunez consent judgment and remedial orders aimed at improving conditions for both Persons in Custody (PIC) and staff.

- Strong interest in criminal justice, law enforcement, or legal studies.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
-Ability to take accurate notes and synthesize information effectively.
- Basic understanding of legal terminology and procedures (preferred).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and research tools

As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
