Job Description

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

About the Role, Mission or Department Overview

Wirecutter is seeking an ambitious and motivated testing operations manager to join our newsroom operations department. We're looking for an operational leader with an impressive track record of efficient and organized logistics management, who is full of creative ideas to streamline and unify our product testing efforts across Wirecutter's newsroom. We're also seeking a journalistically-minded strategist and collaborator, who prioritize the goals of our newsroom and the needs of our readers. This is a critical role — and one that you will help to shape.

You will lead a new team dedicated to managing product testing at our Long Island City facility, supporting our remote journalists, and overseeing our cross-functional planning process and testing calendars. You'll be tasked with finding new ways to organize and track products (both at our office in Long Island City and remotely), create unique testing setups in our testing space and at offsite locations. You'll strategize and coordinate testing needs across our catalogue—including panel testing, taste tests, and more.

You will have a tremendous opportunity for an enterprising newsroom leader with an innovative and resourceful approach to operations.

This is an in-office position, based in our Long Island City office.

Responsibilities:

Steer testing across Wirecutter's newsroom, including developing protocols, principles, and processes; managing testing in our Long Island City facility, remotely, and in offsite locations; and working directly with journalists on day-to-day logistics

Manage, allocate, and forecast a large testing operations budget to ensure expenditures for test products, equipment, facilities, and services drive our journalism and company goals forward

Drive strategy, efficiency, and excellence for all testing workflows, from our inventory tracking to communication and collaboration to ethical and compliance guidelines

Oversee our cross-functional testing calendars, building long-term testing plans and communicating upcoming in-office testing to our newsroom

Partner with our editorial operations manager to align our testing priorities and calendars with broader editorial plans and priorities.

Work with journalists and senior-level editors to conceive of and execute testing projects and events that power our most important journalism, from feature stories to investigations to multimedia storytelling

Collaborate on strategic conversations around the long-term needs of our testing facility and the evolution of our test spaces, including measuring the impacts of investments and expenditures on our journalistic and business goals

Collaborate with our editorial, photo, and video teams to provide resources and support, and solve any logistical roadblocks surrounding testing

Recruit, supervise, and develop members of the testing operations team, providing guidance, tools, and direction

Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

You will report to the deputy director of editorial operations and testing.

Basic Qualifications:

5+ years of professional experience in a product testing, inventory, or project management-based role

3+ years of experience working cross-functionally as a leader and people manager

Preferred Qualifications:

Extensive experience creating and maintaining internal systems, processes, and databases, especially inventory tracking

Extensive experience managing a production, studio, or similar workspace with projects or events to coordinate

Extensive experience juggling various priorities, assignments, and stakeholder relationships simultaneously

Proficiency with Google Workspace, Airtable, Slack, Miro, and other project and database management tools

Experience in journalism and/or newsroom operations
