Job Summary/Purpose:
The Attorney provides direct legal representation and strategic advocacy for individuals impacted by domestic violence and related forms of victimization. As a key member of the VISTAS Program, the attorney develops case strategies, prepares legal documents, and represents clients in court proceedings, while maintaining a trauma-informed and client-centered approach. In addition to client representation, this role provides legal supervision to VISTAS Legal Victim Advocates and offers consultation to program staff. The attorney also plays an active role in program development, legal education outreach, and policy enhancement.
Essential Duties and Key Responsibilities:
Collaborates with the VISTAS Program team to support an integrated, trauma-informed approach to legal advocacy and services for victim-survivors.
Provides professional legal supervision and consultation to VISTAS Legal Victim Advocates, and offers legal insight and guidance to other VISTAS team members as needed.
Conducts in-depth client interviews to assess legal needs, establish case priorities, and determine appropriate legal remedies.
Develops case theory and litigation strategies tailored to each client’s circumstances and aligned with current legal standards.
Draft legal pleadings, including summons, motions, answers, memoranda of law, and briefs necessary for effective representation.
Represents clients in negotiations, court hearings, trials, and legal proceedings, including initial status conferences and protection order hearings.
Provides ongoing legal counseling to clients, informing them of rights, legal options, risks, and implications throughout the course of representation.
Maintains accurate and timely case files and documentation, in accordance with agency protocols and ethical standards.
Engages in continuous legal education, staying informed of changes in statutes, case law, and best practices relevant to victim advocacy.
Identifies program needs, resource gaps, and legal trends, working in collaboration with management to support program development and strategic planning.
Plans and facilitates Legal Educational Nights and community workshops to inform victim-survivors of their legal rights and available protections.
All members of the SDLR workforce are expected to support the agency’s community outreach, civic engagement, and recruitment efforts.
Support the agency’s fundraising objectives, which may include tasks such as active fundraising, grant development, solicitation of donations, agency ambassadorship, informational outreach, and public speaking.
Commitment to and experience with equity, cultural relevance, diversity, social justice, and disparity reduction practices with persons of color, agencies of color, and underserved communities.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, co-workers, agency partners, and the public.

Required Education, experience and Credentialing:
Juris Doctor Degree
License to Practice Law in Colorado
3-5 Years of experience in practice of law for victims of sexual, domestic, and physical violence, and crime
Demonstrated organizational skills
Spanish is required

Working Environment and Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: stand, sit, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate computers, telephones, and a variety of office equipment.
Occasionally may need to reach, stoop, or kneel.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work.
