Job Description

LOCATION: North Slope Borough Villages, Alaska (Anaktuvak Pass, Atqasuk, Kaktovik, Nuiqsut, Point Hope, Point Lay, Utqiaqvik (Barrow), and Wainwright)

REPORTS TO: Public Services Librarian

WORK SCHEDULE: Up to 20 hours a week

COMPENSATION: $15 - $21/hour, Temporary Part-Time, As Needed Position

SUMMARY OF POSITION: Performs a variety of technical and para-professional library functions related to the daily operations of the library.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Maintain library circulation activities. 

Assist patrons with basic reference questions, answer telephone, and check library e-mail. 

Help patrons in using library resources to locate and interpret information. 

Shelve books and maintain orderliness of collections. 

Assist librarians in the development and coordination of programs, services, events and displays. 

Collect and compile statistics reflecting daily library use, and group activities. 

Process incoming and out-going Alaska Library Catalog holds.

Assist in processing new materials. 

Comply with College policies, procedures and administrative directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances. 

Interacts effectively in a multicultural environment and engages in Iñupiat cultural activities in the workplace.

Perform other duties as assigned. 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Excellent customer service skills

Demonstrated experience and knowledge of computer applications.

Good oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to interact effectively in a multi-cultural environment.

Available to work one night per week and every 4th or 5th Saturday.

Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.

Demonstrated library work experience.

Demonstrated experience working with children.

Demonstrated bilingual speaking skills in English and Iñupiaq.

Demonstrated knowledge in one or more of the following areas: post-secondary educational systems, North Slope Borough [NSB] institutions and organizations; Iñupiat culture, language, values, and traditions.

Ability to interpret and represent College actions and western institutions to the North Slope community.

Ability to support Ilisagvik College’s mission.

REQUIRED (EDUCATION/SPECIAL SKILLS/TRAINING):

High school diploma or equivalent or some college.

 

PREFERRED (EDUCATION/SPECIAL SKILLS/TRAINING):

Associate’s degree or equivalent.

Valid driver’s license.

The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
