POSITION DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Temporary Landfill Operator/ Administrative Assistant
Department: Solid Waste Landfill
Reports To: Landfill Manager, his designee, and the Office Administrator
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position will be from May 1, 2026 to September 1, 2026
POSITION SUMMARY:
Operates the computerized scale system, inspects and weighs incoming and outgoing vehicles, operates equipment as directed to maintain scale area, prints tickets, takes cash and reconciles daily records, and assists with record digitization and retention in Landfill Main Office.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operates the landfill scale and computer software. Physically inspects incoming waste to ensure it is acceptable according to state law. Must properly categorize and charge out each load. Directs customers to proper dumping areas. Enforces landfill safety and waste acceptability rules. Performs general office duties as required.
Ensures that special waste has the proper documentation and is acceptable for disposal. Stays in contact with landfill operators to make sure the waste is consistent with the characterization form.
Receives cash and reconciles cash receipts. Checks the daily activity log and makes corrections if necessary. Ensures the security of the cash box. Able to write tickets in the event the computer or scales are inoperable. Prints reports as requested.
Digitize paper documents using scanners and imaging equipment, Index, categorize, and store digital files in accordance with established naming conventions and retention schedules.
Manage records retention and disposition in compliance with state, federal, and organizational regulations. Organize and prepare physical files for scanning, archiving, or destruction. Collaborate with departments to ensure records are captured and stored correctly.
OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manually clear mud or snow from the scale. Monitors wind and closes landfill when in excess of 40 MPH. Cleans and maintains the scale house and restroom. May be required to attend training.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
Good math aptitude with ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, common fractions and decimals
General office equipment skills (i.e. printer/scanner/copier, computer, cash register and calculator).
Knowledge of Microsoft Office software programs/Google Suites.
Skill in:
Good communication skills to interact with management, co-workers and the public
Is courteous and diplomatic with the public.
Self-motivated and able to work without constant supervision
Abilities:
Ability to work in a solitary and remote environment
Ability to keep level head during busy times
Strong organization and attention-to-detail skills
Education and/or Experience:
Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Licenses or Certificates:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver license.
Must become state scale operator certified
First Aid/ CPR/AED Certification preferred
Physical Demands:
Long periods of standing and sitting
Bending down and reaching up
Handling, seizing, holding, grasping, or otherwise working with hands
Unaided lifting up to 25 pounds.
Physically able to shovel snow and mud, clean and mop office
Work Environment:
Work is mainly performed in an office setting. Exposure to loud noises, fumes, odors and extreme weather conditions is frequent.
