The Design Programme, housed within the School of Architecture, Planning and Design, emphasises creative exploration, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration across the Faculty.

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a talented Fablab Technician to join our growing Design Programme within the Faculty of Engineering & Design (FoED) at the University of Auckland. You’ll be part of a dynamic and well‑resourced environment that supports creative experimentation, rapid prototyping, making, and iterative design practice.

Working within the School of Architecture, Planning and Design, you’ll collaborate with a supportive team of technicians and academic staff to help students realise a wide range of projects across our diverse fabrication environments, from traditional workshop machinery to advanced digital and sensor‑based technologies.

We welcome candidates with experience across equipment such as:

• Laser cutters
• CNC machines
• 3D printers
• Water‑jet cutters
• Workshop machinery
• CNC Routers
• Soldering stations
• Sewing machines (incl. digital embroidery)
• …and more

This is a full‑time (37.5 hours per week), permanent position.

Salary range: $63,600 – $79,300 per annum, depending on skills and experience.

He kōrero mōu | About you

You’ll be someone who enjoys working with people and can communicate confidently with students, researchers, industry partners, and colleagues from a wide range of backgrounds. You’ll be comfortable learning new tools and techniques quickly (including associated software) and enthusiastic about sharing your knowledge with others.

You will bring experience in:

• Woodworking and/or materials‑based fabrication
• Digital printing and cutting technologies (e.g., 3D printing, CNC milling, laser cutting)
• 3D modelling and animation software such as Blender, Rhino, Fusion 360, 3DS Max, or Maya
• Supporting staff and students with fixing 3D models, designing objects, rendering, and preparing assets for game engines

You should also:

• Hold a qualification in materials/woodworking or a related industry (e.g., model making, cabinetmaking, or boatbuilding), or have relevant experience
• Have established experience using a range of analogue workshop machinery
• Obtain and maintain a First Aid certificate
• Demonstrate a proactive approach to health and safety
• Stay up to date with emerging technologies and fabrication techniques
