Quick Summary
We're looking for a Tech Lead who is equally an architect and a builder to own the technical direction of our high-performance analytical system, mapping out storage architectures and making the hard calls on abstractions. The ideal candidate will be hands-on with Rust, Apache Arrow, and a strong background in data platform architecture.
Required Skills
Job Description
At Rerun, we're building the missing data stack for Physical AI. Our open-source project is already used by some of the best teams in the world, and we're now building the commercial data platform on top of it — a high-performance analytical system written in Rust, built on Apache Arrow.
We're looking for a hands-on Tech Lead who is equally an architect and a builder. You'll own the technical direction of the platform — mapping out storage architectures, making the hard calls on abstractions — and then go implement them. Our engineers will look to you for direction on storage, query execution, and data infrastructure. This is not a role where you write documents and attend meetings — you'll be in the codebase, shaping architecture through design and implementation, while raising the bar for the team around you.
What you'll do
• Set technical direction across the data platform — and be a credible voice across the wider engineering org
• Design, implement, and operationalize core systems hands-on: writing code, reviewing PRs, debugging production issues, making architectural calls
• Write POCs to validate ideas and give the team something concrete to move toward
• Define the boundaries between the data platform, SDK, and lower layers of the stack
• Represent Rerun's approach to data infrastructure externally — at conferences, in the community, with customers
We'd love it if you have
• Deep, hands-on experience building, optimizing, and operating storage and/or database systems in production
• Polyglot background: you're senior enough to have worked across languages and paradigms, and comfortable picking up new ones — we're a Rust shop and you'll need to get fluent
• Familiarity with columnar formats (Arrow, Parquet), query engines, or storage engine design
• The kind of technical credibility that makes people trust your opinion and look to you for direction
• Technical evangelism: representing Rerun's novel approaches to data infrastructure at conferences, in the community, and with customers. You'll be a visible, credible voice for what we're building and why it matters
• Partnering with product to ensure the platform evolves around real customer needs, not theoretical ones
This role tends to resonate with engineers who
• Want to shape a data platform while it's still being defined, not maintain one that's already built
• Are as comfortable debugging a production issue as they are designing a new storage architecture
• Enjoy creating clarity for a team while things are still evolving — not by adding process, but by making the right technical calls and explaining them well
• Care about how customers actually experience the system, not just how it looks on a design doc
How we work at Rerun
• We're a remote company headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden.
• We meet up in person for a week roughly once a quarter
• The team you'll join has members in European and US-east timezones
• Everyone is available for synchronous work between 1:30–5:00pm CET.
Given our current team distribution, candidates outside of Europe or the US will be considered on a case-by-case basis to ensure there’s enough overlap for effective collaboration.
• We've put together an uncommonly talented tech team, value agency and helpfulness highly, and expect everyone to take broad responsibility for what they build
• We offer competitive cash and equity compensation, six weeks paid vacation, and whatever hardware and software you need to do your job
