Quick Summary

Join the CERN team and work on advanced cryogenic cooling and measurement techniques, applying your expertise in cryogenic engineering to contribute to the pursuit of fundamental scientific knowledge.

Job Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Introduction

You will join a team working on advanced cryogenic cooling and measurement techniques and play a key role in the daily operation of the Cryolab, a unique research facility with test stands operating at temperatures down to 50 mK. You will focus on the development, operation and technical follow-up of these installations in close collaboration with users and colleagues.

Functions

• Contribute to the development of the operational principles of cryogenic test stands based on user needs and technical requirements.
• Work with the team to translate these principles into thermodynamic and mechanical design solutions.
• Coordinate the production of these test stands, following the agreed timeline and budget constraints.
• Plan and organise the Cryolab activities according to operational priorities, available personnel and liquid helium supply.
• Support Cryolab users in the operation of the test facilities, providing daily guidance on thermodynamics, low temperature instrumentation and operational procedures.
• Monitor the performance of active test stations by discussing the results and their analysis with users.
• Prepare and maintain technical documentation, operating procedures and records related to your activities.
• Contribute to preparation and delivery of cryogenic safety courses in collaboration with the Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Protection Department.
• Become the safety contact for the buildings and activities under the Cryolab’s responsibility.

Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanics, Electromechanics, Instrumentation or a related field.

Experience:

• Experience in cryogenics systems.
• Experience in the design, construction follow-up and commissioning of complex mechanical installations.
• Experience in preparing technical documentation, operating procedures and test records.

Technical competencies:

• Knowledge and application of cryogenic fluid and material properties.
• Knowledge and application of cryogenic heat transfer and insulation techniques.
• Operation and maintenance of cryogenic systems.
• Knowledge of low temperature instrumentation and measurement techniques.
• Knowledge of thermodynamics.

Behavioural competencies:

• Demonstrating Flexibility: demonstrating a willingness to accept changing circumstances; supporting initiatives for change.
• Learning and Sharing Knowledge: keeping up-to-date with developments in own field of expertise and readily absorbing new information.
• Working in Teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.
• Achieving Results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
