Job Description
About Us
OkWhen is an event tech and production company that runs conferences, hybrid events, and virtual experiences on our own SaaS platform plus in-house AV and fabrication. We are expanding from small and mid-size corporate events into high-end, multi-camera, LED-heavy, scenic-driven shows.
We already have: world-class audio, lighting, logistics, and a fully equipped fabrication workshop with high-end machinery. We are looking for a Technical Director / Production Designer who has played in the big leagues and can turn our capabilities into repeatable, premium productions.
Role Overview
You are the senior brain that owns show vision and technical integrity from concept to execution. You design stages, LED layouts, camera and jib plots, and scenic elements that can be built in our shop, then lead teams on-site to deliver broadcast-quality shows.
This is a hands-on, high-impact IC role, not a desk-only manager job.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategy and Offer Design
• Architect standard premium show packages: stage, LED, cameras, jib, and scenic options that can be reused across clients.
• Collaborate with founder and Director of Production to define technical standards, gear lists, and labor models for these packages.
• Help identify and design the first 3 to 5 “founding shows” to build our high-end portfolio.
2. Show and Technical Design
• Translate client goals into stage looks, LED wall configurations, camera and jib positions, and overall show flow.
• Create CAD drawings, plots, and system diagrams for each show.
• Specify video, LED, rigging, power, and control systems that balance impact and reliability.
3. Scenic and Fabrication
• Design scenic and staging that can be efficiently built in our in-house shop.
• Produce build drawings, cut lists, and material specs for fabrication.
• Work shoulder to shoulder with shop staff to prototype, refine, and standardize scenic elements.
4. Preproduction and Budgeting
• Scope technical and scenic needs, build gear and labor lists, and estimate costs that protect margin.
• Advance shows with venues and vendors for power, rigging, loading, and safety requirements.
• Support sales with technical input and visuals that help close premium projects.
5. On-site Leadership
• Serve as lead technical authority on-site for premium shows.
• Direct video, LED, scenic, rigging, and stage crews during load-in, rehearsal, and show.
• Run or support tech rehearsals and solve issues under pressure while protecting show quality.
6. Systems and Documentation
• Create and maintain templates, checklists, and standard operating procedures for production and fabrication.
• Keep accurate documentation of show files, presets, and fabrication standards so we can replicate wins.
Success Looks like
Within 6 to 12 months, our premium shows have a distinctive look and consistent standard.
• We have 3 to 5 flagship case studies with strong photo and video assets you helped create.
• Sales can confidently sell defined premium packages that you designed.
• Our fabrication and technical execution for high-end shows is predictable, on time, and on budget.
Requirements:
• 5+ years in live event production as Technical Director, Production Designer, or similar.
• Proven experience on medium to large shows with large-format LED, multicam, and complex staging.
• Strong scenic and fabrication background: able to design and draft for wood/metal builds and work with CNC or similar equipment.
• Proficiency with CAD or 3D tools (Vectorworks, AutoCAD, SketchUp, or similar).
• Solid understanding of power distribution, rigging fundamentals, and event safety.
• Experience leading technical and scenic crews on-site.
• Portfolio that shows high-end stages, LED looks, and productions you owned technically.
Benefits:
• Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
• Retirement Plan (401k, IRA)
• Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
• Family Leave (Maternity, Paternity)
• Training & Development
• Work From Home
