Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Tax Preparer to join our accounting firm. In this role, you will be responsible for preparing and reviewing individual, business, and/or trust tax returns with accuracy and full compliance with federal and state tax regulations. The ideal candidate holds an active CPA license and brings hands-on experience with Lacerte tax software. Key Responsibilities
Tax Preparation & Filing
• Prepare federal and state income tax returns for individuals (Form 1040), corporations (Form 1120/1120S), partnerships (Form 1065), and/or trusts and estates (Form 1041) as applicable
• Accurately input financial data and supporting documentation into Lacerte tax software
• Review prior-year returns, financial statements, and source documents to ensure completeness and accuracy
• Identify applicable deductions, credits, and tax planning opportunities for each client
• Ensure all returns are prepared in compliance with current federal, state, and local tax codes
Client Communication & Service
• Communicate professionally with clients to gather missing documentation, clarify financial information, and explain tax outcomes
• Respond to client inquiries regarding return status, tax notices, and filing questions in a timely manner
• Maintain a high standard of client service consistent with the firm's reputation for accuracy and professionalism
Review & Quality Control
• Self-review completed returns prior to submission to ensure accuracy and minimize errors
• Collaborate with senior staff and managers during the review process to address questions and resolve discrepancies
• Stay current with changes in tax law, IRS guidance, and state tax regulations that affect client filings
Documentation & File Management
• Maintain complete and organized client files including source documents, workpapers, and signed authorizations
• Track return status and deadlines to ensure timely filing and extension requests where needed
• Document tax positions and notes clearly within the return for review and audit trail purposes
• Adhere to firm protocols for document storage, version control, and client confidentiality
Tax Planning Support
• Assist with quarterly estimated tax calculations and year-end tax planning for clients as directed
• Flag potential tax issues or planning opportunities to senior staff or management
• Support the preparation of tax projections and analysis for client consultations
Required Qualifications
• Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license in good standing
• Proficiency with Lacerte tax software — this is the firm's primary tax preparation platform
• 2 or more years of experience preparing individual and/or business tax returns in a public accounting setting
• Strong working knowledge of federal and state income tax regulations
• High attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy in all work product
• Ability to manage a high volume of returns during peak tax season while maintaining quality and meeting deadlines
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for client-facing interactions
• Comfortable working independently in a remote environment with minimal supervision
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience preparing a broad range of return types including 1040, 1120, 1120S, 1065, and 1041
• Familiarity with tax research tools such as Checkpoint, CCH IntelliConnect, or similar platforms
• Experience with additional accounting firm software such as QuickBooks, Practice CS, or document management systems
• Prior remote work experience in a public accounting environment
• Experience with multi-state tax filing and apportionment
Technical Requirements
• Lacerte Tax Software — proficiency required
• Microsoft Office Suite — Excel and Word proficiency required
• QuickBooks or equivalent accounting software — preferred
• Secure, reliable home office setup with high-speed internet for remote file access and client communication
