About the role | Mō te tūranga:
We are looking for a Systems Analyst to join the HL7 Messaging team within the Awanui Group IT department. You will report to the Senior Developer and play a key role in enabling seamless, accurate health information exchange across New Zealand. In this role, you will design, implement, and support electronic interfaces between Awanui laboratory systems and external stakeholders, including Health New Zealand, other laboratories, hospitals, and community referrers.
You will analyse requirements, develop interface specifications, coordinate testing, and ensure reliable, standards-compliant HL7 messaging. Your work will directly support critical clinical decision-making, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance, contributing to the accuracy and integrity of patient data across the healthcare system.
This is a permanent, full-time position working 80 hours per fortnight and can be based in Christchurch, Wellington, or Auckland.
Key Responsibilities:
Interface Design and Development: Work with the HL7 Messaging Senior Developer to design, configure, and implement new interfaces, ensuring accurate and reliable HL7 message exchange with external stakeholders.
Change Management and Quality: Participate in change management processes, ensuring all interface updates are tested, validated, and documented. Support quality control initiatives and identify opportunities to improve integration processes.
System Monitoring and Optimization: Monitor HL7 message flows, queues, and data integrity, proactively resolving issues and enhancing system performance.
Collaboration: Work closely with laboratory staff, referrers, hospitals, IT colleagues, and external vendors to maintain system reliability and support seamless integration across the organisation.
Privacy, Security, and Compliance: Adhere to company policies on privacy, security, and health data standards, maintaining a safe and compliant work environment.|

To be successful in this role you need to have:
You’ll be proactive and experienced in complex, mission-critical systems, delivering reliable, standards-compliant interoperability solutions while ensuring the accuracy and integrity of clinical data.
Proven experience in systems analysis, interface development, or application support, ideally within healthcare or similarly complex environments.
Strong knowledge of HL7 messaging standards (particularly HL7 v2.x) and experience with interoperability platforms (e.g., Mirth Connect).
Proficiency in JavaScript and working knowledge of SQL and database structures.
Experience querying, validating, and ensuring integrity of critical clinical or transactional data.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organisational skills.
Strong communication and collaboration skills with a customer-focused mindset.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
