Swing Deck Hand

Position Summary:   

The Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater is seeking adaptable and dependable Swing Deck Hands to join our production team. Swing Deck Hands provide critical backstage coverage by learning multiple crew tracks and stepping into active show positions as needed. This role ensures consistent, high-quality backstage operations across productions and performances, supporting smooth transitions and the safe movement of scenery, props, and stage elements. The Swing Deck Hand works closely with the Stage Manager, Deck Supervisor, and other production staff to uphold the theater’s professional standards of safety, precision, and teamwork. 

Duties and Responsibilities:   

Show Coverage & Track Learning 

Learn multiple backstage tracks and performance cues across one or more productions. 

Maintain up-to-date familiarity with all assigned positions to provide consistent coverage when a crew member is unavailable. 

Step into any learned track with minimal notice while maintaining the established show flow and safety standards. 

Keep detailed and accurate personal track notes to ensure continuity and consistency. 

Stage Operations 

Assist with the setup, operation, and strike of scenery, props, and stage equipment for rehearsals, performances, and changeovers. 

Execute scene changes accurately, efficiently, and quietly as called by the Stage Manager. 

Verify that all scenic and prop elements are correctly preset and securely fastened prior to each performance. 

Support load-ins and load-outs as directed by the Technical Director. 

Fly System and Rigging (as assigned) 

Safely operate the theater’s fly system under the direction of the Deck Lead or Stage Manager. 

Conduct pre-show safety checks of flown elements, linesets, and rigging hardware. 

Adhere to all established safety procedures and best practices for rigging and fly operations. 

Coordination and Communication 

Collaborate with the Stage Management team, Deck Lead, and technical departments to ensure smooth show transitions and consistency between crew tracks. 

Communicate effectively with other crew members to maintain backstage safety and efficiency. 

Contribute to maintaining a clean, safe, and organized backstage environment at all times. 

Technical Rehearsals and Cross-Training 

Attend technical rehearsals to learn show-specific cues and choreography for multiple positions. 

Participate in ongoing cross-training and departmental meetings to stay current with evolving show needs. 

Provide general technical support as needed, including minor repairs or adjustments to scenic or prop elements. 

Respond calmly and efficiently to unexpected issues or emergencies during performances 

Safety and Compliance 

Uphold all theater safety policies and procedures, including those related to rigging, lifting, and personal protective equipment. 

Report any safety concerns, damaged equipment, or unsafe conditions to the Stage Manager, Deck Supervisor, or Head of Stage Management immediately. 

Follow all fire and emergency evacuation procedures. 

Skills and Qualifications:  

Education & Experience 

No formal education required; training will be provided. 

Prior experience in stage crew, backstage operations, or technical theater preferred. 

Skills & Competencies 

Strong adaptability and quick learning in high-paced, live performance settings. 

Excellent recall and ability to manage multiple track responsibilities. 

Knowledge of stagecraft, scenic handling, and backstage protocols. 

Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. 

Reliable, punctual, and flexible, with the ability to respond to last-minute schedule changes. 

Physical ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in confined or elevated spaces. 

Availability for evening, weekend, and holiday performances as required by the production schedule.
