Job Title: Heavy Haul Swamper
Location: Williamsport, PA
Position Overview
West Penn Heavy Haul is seeking a Heavy Haul Swamper to support rig moves and the transportation of drilling rigs and oil and gas-related equipment. This role works directly alongside riggers, operators, and drivers to assist with loading, unloading, staging, and securing equipment. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, physically capable, and comfortable working in fast-paced oil and gas field environments.
Key Responsibilities
Assist with loading, unloading, and staging drilling rigs and oil and gas equipment
Support safe handling and securement of loads during transport and rig move operations
Act as a ground guide for equipment operators during positioning and movement
Use tag lines to stabilize loads during lifting operations
Assist riggers by organizing, preparing, and delivering rigging equipment to the job site
Inspect rigging equipment (chains, binders, straps, shackles) before and after use
Provide crane signals when acting as a backup or assisting rigger
Assist in rigging pole trucks, tandems, and other specialized oil and gas equipment
Perform pre- and post-operation inspections and report unsafe conditions
Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas on pads, yards, and job sites
Follow all company safety policies, site-specific rules, and OSHA regulations
Participate in safety meetings, job safety analyses, and ongoing training
Essential Job Functions
Lifting & Carrying: Regularly lift, carry, and handle tools and rigging components weighing up to 50 lbs
Teamwork: Work closely with riggers, operators, drivers, and supervisors to support safe operations
Adaptability: Transition between swamper, ground support, and assisting rigger duties as needed
Environmental Exposure: Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and precipitation
Physical Endurance: Perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods, including climbing, bending, kneeling, and standing
Qualifications
Experience
Prior experience as a swamper or in oil and gas, heavy haul, or rig move operations preferred
Familiarity with rigging equipment and load handling practices is a plus
Skills & Abilities
Basic knowledge of crane signaling and rigging fundamentals
Strong communication skills and ability to follow direction
High attention to detail and commitment to safe work practices
Certifications
Rigging and signaling certifications preferred; must be willing to obtain if not already held
Work Schedule
Flexible scheduling required, including extended shifts, weekends, overnight work, and travel as needed to support rig move operations
