Position Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) to support our surgical team within the Women’s Center. This role provides critical intraoperative assistance to surgeons, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical procedures. The ideal candidate is experienced in perioperative care, maintains strict adherence to sterile technique, and thrives in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare the operating room by ensuring all instruments, supplies, and equipment are available and functioning properly
Assist with patient positioning, surgical site preparation, and sterile draping
Maintain a sterile field and adhere to aseptic technique throughout procedures
Provide intraoperative assistance under the direction of the surgeon, including:
Tissue handling, retraction, suctioning, and exposure
Clamping, cutting, ligating, and suturing
Hemostasis and dissection assistance
Trocar placement and support in minimally invasive procedures
Assist with wound and fascial closure as directed by the surgeon
Apply dressings, drains, splints, and bandages post-procedure
Support perioperative patient care, including transfers and preparation for recovery
Utilize open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgical instrumentation within scope of practice
Communicate effectively with surgeons and perioperative team members to ensure smooth procedural flow
Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with organizational standards
Adhere to all regulatory, safety, infection control, HIPAA, and OSHA requirements
Participate in quality improvement initiatives, training, and departmental meetings
Perform additional duties as assigned within scope of practice
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required
Associate degree in surgical technology or related field preferred
Current Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) credential (or equivalent, as required by state law)
Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist, Surgical First Assistant, or similar role preferred
Demonstrated competency in surgical assisting and perioperative practices
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (or ability to obtain within required timeframe)
Required Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative techniques
Proficiency in sterile technique and surgical field maintenance
Skilled in tissue handling, suturing, retraction, and hemostasis
Ability to assist in open, minimally invasive, and robotic-assisted procedures
Excellent attention to detail and commitment to patient safety
Strong communication and teamwork skills in a high-pressure environment
Ability to anticipate surgeon needs and respond quickly during procedures
Sound judgment and ability to remain calm under pressure
Basic computer and clinical documentation proficiency
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for extended periods during surgical procedures
Frequent bending, reaching, stooping, and manual dexterity required
Ability to lift and assist with patients, equipment, or supplies (up to 50 pounds, within safety guidelines)
Fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination for precise instrument handling
Visual acuity to observe the operative field and read monitors and documentation
Ability to hear and respond effectively to team communication and surgical environment cues
