Job Summary

The Supported Child Development (SCD) Assistant provides individualized support that enables children with diverse abilities to fully participate in the childcare settings selected by their families. Working as an integrated member of the childcare team which includes childcare staff, families, and SCD program professionals, the Assistant helps create inclusive environments where all children can engage meaningfully in daily activities. Through collaboration, adaptation, and consistent support, the SCD Assistant promotes each child’s development, fosters positive social interaction, and helps ensure that participation in the program is safe, respectful, and enriching.

Qualifications

Certificate, diploma, or degree in a child development–related field such as Early Childhood Education, Special Needs Education, Certified Education Assistant, Bachelor of Education, or an equivalent combination of related training and experience.

Minimum of one year of experience supporting children with additional or diverse support needs.

Required

Successful completion of all pre-employment screening requirements, including:

Criminal record check

Physician’s report

Immunization history

TB skin test

Professional reference checks

Submission of educational transcripts

Current First Aid certification.

Early Intervention and Prevention Training (or willingness to obtain).

Valid BC Driver’s License, access to a reliable vehicle, a clean driver’s abstract, and the ability to obtain business‑use insurance if required.

Signed Confidentiality Agreement.

Commitment to adhering to OneSky policies and procedures, the program operations manual, and the agency’s Code of Ethics.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Strong understanding of developmentally appropriate early childhood practices and inclusive approaches, with the ability to model and communicate these strategies to childcare staff and families.

Demonstrated commitment to the inclusion of all children within community-based childcare environments.

Awareness of cultural and socioeconomic factors that influence family systems, along with the ability to apply culturally responsive and respectful practices.

Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Competence in basic computer use, including writing and submitting monthly reports, using database systems, and communicating via email.

Ability to present oneself in a positive, professional manner always.

Commitment to ongoing professional learning and willingness to participate in relevant training to enhance skills and knowledge.

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with agency and program expectations.

Ability to build and sustain supportive, collaborative relationships with families and childcare staff.

Skill in supporting children with a wide range of developmental, behavioral, physical, and communication needs (e.g., Autism, challenging behaviours, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, FASD, speech and language delays).

Physical ability to perform the duties of the role, confirmed through a physician’s letter.

Flexibility and ability to travel between communities and childcare programs as required.

Responsibilities

Supported Child Development (SCD) is committed to collaborative, inclusive, and family‑centered practice. The following responsibilities outline expectations for SCD Assistants in their work with children, families, childcare settings, and the Supported Child Development Team.

Working in a Child Care Setting

Always maintain professionalism, including punctuality, appropriate notice of absences, effective communication, and professional appearance.

Communicate clearly and respectfully with the childcare team while understanding and supporting the setting’s philosophy and practices.

Remain open and receptive to suggestions from childcare staff, community professionals, and the SCD team.

Seek guidance from Centre Supervisors, SCD Consultants, or the Program Supervisor in an appropriate and professional manner.

Be familiar with the emergency procedures and your responsibilities within those plans.

Working With Children

Actively support the child’s inclusion in daily activities by adapting materials and encouraging peer interactions while applying developmentally appropriate practices within the setting.

Create and implement strategies and activities that are play‑based, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate.

Understand the child’s goals as outlined in the service plan and support progress toward those goals in everyday routines.

Provide appropriate support that fosters independence and success while treating all children with respect and responding effectively to behavioural challenges.

Observe and document the child’s participation, progress, and any functional changes in a professional manner.

Submit requires monthly and quarterly reports on time.

Interaction With the Child’s Family

Maintain confidentiality of all child and family information, as required by the Confidentiality Agreement and Code of Ethics.

Share appropriate updates with parents/guardians, including information from therapists, the childcare setting, and SCD.

Respond respectfully to parents’ concerns, honour the diverse backgrounds of families and children, and participate in team meetings, assessments, goal‑planning sessions, and home visits as required.

Supported Child Development

Communicate with the Program Supervisor or designate regarding resource needs, child-related concerns, program questions, developmental observations, and noteworthy events.

Submit all required documentation—including Incident Reports, monthly reports, and observation notes—in a timely manner.

Complete and submit monthly reports for each supported child by the first week of the following month.

Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, workshops, and required training sessions.

Submit timesheets, leave requests, and sick‑leave notifications on time.

Participate in SCD program events, projects, and meetings as requested by the Program Supervisor or designate.

Other

Contribute to inclusive, high‑quality service environments that respect participants and support their choices and abilities.

Maintain confidentiality in all aspects of your work.

Support and participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives and accreditation requirements.

Participate in OneSky meetings and events as required.

Demonstrate support for OneSky’s mission, vision, and values.

Perform additional duties as assigned to support program operations and integrity.

Working Conditions

Travel within the South Okanagan/Similkameen region may be necessary, as this position may be assigned to specific geographic areas within our service delivery region. The SCD Assistant may also be assigned to a variety of settings within those geographic areas based on identified service delivery needs.
