We are looking to retain our highway maintenance operations footprint in the Peace Region of Alberta in CMAs 501, 502 and 503 and are preparing responses to several RFP tenders announced by the Government of Alberta for this region.
As such, LaPrairie Works is calling for applications to fill the role of Superintendent, Highway Maintenance Operations. LaPrairie Works Inc. expects to fill this position should we be selected as the successful proponent.
The Superintendent, Highway Maintenance Operations, will report to the Operations Manager, and will oversee LAPRAIRIE's highway maintenance operations, within the CMAs.
Key Responsibilities
Organizing and monitoring highway maintenance operations and extra work projects within the CMA region(s) to meet contract specifications, applicable response timelines, and the related reporting to achieve scheduled milestones.
Effectively communicating with CMA forepersons (verbal and written) to manage and track operational levels of service, determining that performance deliverables are being met, making adjustments where / when necessary to do so, and reporting on overall compliance within the Highway Maintenance Contract - CMA specifications.
Overseeing winter event responses, throughout CMA, for compliance to the applicable response specifications, preparing / submitting related reports to ATEC Department representatives and regularly updating the Alberta 511 platform with accurate and up-to-date information during the course of each winter storm event.
Monitoring critical supplies and snow & ice control materials, the associated response timelines, deployment of manpower and equipment resources, and overall performance levels, to minimize the opportunity for non-compliances and related financial penalties.
Ensuring that LaPrairie Works Inc. Environmental, Health & Safety (HSE) and Quality Management Programs are being properly applied, documented, and followed in the field.
Facilitating the instruction of LWI’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) / Safe Work Practices / HSE and QA/QC Program elements.
Ensuring that highway maintenance personnel are mobilized in accordance with daily, weekly, monthly, and annual work schedules.
Monitoring and assessing area supervisor performance, relative to LWI’s HSE and QA-QC programs, Corporate Policies, and Highway Maintenance Contract Specifications, while also focusing on team development, mentoring, and continuous professional growth.
Ensuring that emergency highway maintenance work is communicated and expedited at any time it is required.
Completing necessary schedules / reports / inspections / investigations and maintaining concise journal records, daily.
Utilizing effective, business communication skills (written & verbal), both internally and externally with stakeholders and members of the general-public.
Proactively engaging with local stakeholders through regular meetings, updates, and feedback sessions to build strong relationships and address concerns promptly.
Displaying a professional, positive, and collaborative approach to problem solving with subordinates, colleagues, partners, clients, stakeholders, local community residents, and political leadership.
Required Skills
The preferred candidate will possess a solid background in Highway and Bridge Maintenance, Public Works and/or Civil Construction operations.
5+ years of field supervisory experience in a senior role.
Related technical training (such as SAIT or NAIT C.E.T.) or an equivalent combination of education and field experience would be considered assets.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Strong critical thinking, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet the time demands of unpredictable activities.
Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with LAPRAIRIE’s corporate departments, key business partners, and its customer base.
Ability to innovate, find new methods and principles, and ability to incorporate them into existing practices for continuous improvement.
Solid understanding of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Teams, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
