Summer Language Programs Assistant
Location: 11748 Kingsway Avenue NW Edmonton, Alberta
Closing Date: April 3, 2026, or Until Suitable Candidates Found.
Position Status: Two (2) Full Time (40 hrs per week), Temporary (May-August)
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is recruiting for two (2) full-time, temporary Summer Language Programs Assistants. These are summer term positions with an end date of August 28, 2026. Reporting to the Michif Language Manager, the successful candidates will be responsible for supporting the development and delivery of Michif language programs and supports, ensuring the continued growth and promotion of the Michif language. The successful candidates will have excellent communication skills and will be required to both take direction and work intuitively to support the completion of the department’s goals and objectives in a professionally and culturally appropriate manner.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in the coordination of initiatives aimed at promoting the Michif Language, including the development and delivery of Michif language programs and community engagements
Act as a liaison between the Michif language community and external stakeholders.
Support the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s language unit with the development of strategies to promote awareness of the Michif language.
Develop program materials for internal and external use, including for community engagements, events, and workshops.
Prepare and distribute correspondence in relation to the operations of the Michif Language department.
Present a positive and professional image of the organization when interacting with employees, citizens, visitors, and other external stakeholders.
Assist with administration of Otipemisiwak Métis Government Provincial events & programs.
Other duties as required or assigned.
Skills & Competencies
Passion for community work and promoting the Michif language.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including professional email etiquette and strong public speaking skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships.
Strong planning and organizational skills, with an ability to prioritize daily tasks and long-term objectives.
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, and willingness to learn new skills.
Flexible and adaptable, with an ability to switch between multiple priorities.
Ability to work with and convey messages to different audiences.
Ability to produce professional reports, documents, and presentations.
Political and cultural sensitivity.
Proficient computer skills with experience using Microsoft Office applications, Adobe, and Google Workspace.
Flexible and adaptable to work in a diverse and fast paced environment.
Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture is an asset.
Qualifications
Post-secondary education in Native Studies, Linguistics, Languages, or a related field is preferred. Other relevant training and experience will be considered.
Experience with event and program planning and execution is an asset. School or volunteer experience is valid experience.
Experience working with Indigenous communities is an asset.
Other Requirements
Availability to work Monday to Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.
Ability to work evenings and weekends, as required.
Ability to travel throughout Alberta is a requirement.
Reliable transportation and valid Class 5 driver’s license is required.
