Summer Community Justice Assistant

Location: 11748 Kingsway Avenue NW Edmonton, Alberta 

Closing Date:  April 3, 2026, or until suitable candidate found

Position Status: Full Time (40 hrs per week), Temporary (May-August)

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is recruiting for a full-time, temporary Summer Community Justice Assistant. This is a summer term position with an end date of August 28, 2026. Reporting to the
Director of Justice, the successful candidate, working alongside justice department staff, will assist Métis Albertans with navigating the Canadian justice system. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, confident, and driven individual who is passionate about justice and has the ability to both take direction and work intuitively to support the completion of the department’s goals and objectives.

 

Key Responsibilities

Support and navigate Métis Albertans through the justice system.

Attend both court and legal appointments, when appropriate.

Assist with justice related community engagement events and activities, including in-person presentations and discussions, and online engagements including the Monthly Justice Educational Series.

Build and maintain rapport, trust, and effective relationships with clients while supporting their needs and best interests as it relates to the Justice System.

Ensure documentation and client files are completed, organized, and up to date.

Assist with maintaining and frequently refer to an up-to-date province wide resource database of community-based, culturally safe programming and resources for Métis Albertans.

Assist with intake processes by gathering preliminary information from citizens seeking justice support.

Maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards in all interactions.

Shadow justice staff to gain hands-on experience and understanding of justice system operations.

Assist in developing educational materials (brochures, presentations, online content, etc.) to raise awareness of justice programs.

Present a positive and professional image of the organization when interacting with employees, community and other external stakeholders.

Attend and represent the Otipemisiwak Métis Government at professional conferences, in-service trainings, and meetings.

Support other Otipemisiwak Métis Government justice initiatives and complete other duties as required or assigned.

Skills & Competencies

Knowledge of the Canadian Justice System and justice issues impacting Indigenous peoples.

Ability to be empathetic and non-judgmental when assisting Métis Albertans.

Must be able to handle situations with tact, diplomacy, and understanding. Ability to be firm and assertive when necessary.

Culturally sensitive, compassionate, and trustworthy.

Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Demonstrated time management and organization skills, with the ability to manage deadlines.

Sound analytical thinking, planning, and execution skills.

Ability to work independently and within a team setting.

Flexible and adaptable to work in a diverse and fast paced environment.

Ability to build collaborative, positive relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including clients, service providers, and community.

Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams) and Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Forms.

Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture, people, and values is an asset.

 

Qualifications

Post-secondary education in social work, justice, or a related field is required. Other relevant training and experience will be considered.

1-2 years of experience in a similar role is an asset. School or volunteer experience is valid.

Experience working in the field of justice is an asset.

Indigenous Awareness Training and training in Trauma-Informed Care is an asset.

Other Requirements

Availability to work Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.

Ability to work evenings and weekends, with notice.

Ability to travel throughout Alberta is a requirement.

Reliable transportation is required.

Due to the nature of the work, the applicant must be at least 18 years of age and have government issued photo ID.

Acceptable attainment of a Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Check and Intervention Record Check is required.
