CONTROL CODE: VE Intern-26-02

SUMMARY:

The Mayor’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is the City government's chief financial agency. OMB's staff of analysts and experts assembles and oversees the Mayor’s expense and capital budgets, which fund the services and activities of approximately 90 City agencies and entities.

The Asset Management Unit runs the Asset Inventory Management System (AIMS) a Charter-mandated function that maintains the City’s capital plant inventory and condition information, along with agency maintenance schedules and cost estimates. JOB DESCRIPTION:

The application should feature interactive visualizations, filtering and search capabilities, and clear data presentation that makes AIMS data accessible to non-technical agency users. The intern will work closely with the Asset Management Unit to understand data structures, user needs, and reporting requirements, and will have the opportunity to shape a tool that improves how the City shares and acts on capital asset information.

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Demonstrated experience building a web application (work samples or a portfolio of past projects is a strong plus)
- Proficiency in Python; experience with web frameworks such as Streamlit, Flask, or Django
- Familiarity with SQL and relational databases (SQL Server experience is a plus)
- Experience building dashboards and data visualizations (e.g., Plotly, Matplotlib, or JavaScript charting libraries)
- Understanding of front-end fundamentals (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) for UI/UX polish
- Ability to work with real-world, messy datasets and translate data into clear, actionable views
- Strong problem-solving skills and comfort working iteratively with stakeholder feedback
- Interest in civic technology, public sector innovation, or urban infrastructure
- Familiarity with version control (Git) and basic deployment workflows is a plus
- Prior coursework or project experience in computer science, data science, information systems, or a related field
