Summer Children and Family Services Communications Assistant 

Location: 12308 111 Avenue #200, Edmonton, Alberta            

Closing Date: April 3, 2026, or Until Suitable Candidate Found

Position Status: Full Time (40 hrs per week), Temporary (May-August)

 

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is recruiting for a full-time, temporary Summer Children and Family Services (CFS) Communications Assistant. This is a summer term position with an end date August 28, 2026. Reporting to the Communications Supervisor – CFS, the successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the CFS Department through content creation, event support, and records management. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and organization skills and will be required to both take direction and work intuitively to support the completion of the department’s goals and objectives in a professionally and culturally appropriate manner.

 

Key Responsibilities

Maintain organized and up-to-date filing systems, ensuring easy access to documents and materials.

Manage intake requests and submissions, tracking progress and ensuring timely follow through.

Support CFS department events and committee initiatives by assisting with content creation, material preparation, and logistics.

Coordinate and organize the social media posting calendar to ensure consistent and timely communication.

Record meeting minutes and track action items to support follow-up and accountability.

Update and maintain photo consent forms and image files, ensuring accurate data collection and organization.

Provide suggestions and recommendations for meaningful social media engagement opportunities.

Develop and organize additional avenues for connecting with and supporting rural communities.

Create internal flyers and support internal event coordination and promotion.

Present a positive and professional image of the organization when interacting with employees, citizens, visitors, and other external stakeholders.

Assist with administration of Otipemisiwak Métis Government Provincial events & programs.

Other duties as required or assigned.

 

 Skills & Competencies

We are looking for a motivated, confident individual who is passionate about Indigenous engagement and content creation. Commitment to teamwork and collaboration with colleagues is required. Other skills/competencies include:

Strong technical skills and knowledge of digital media.

Intermediate skills in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).

Experience in SEO, keyword research, and analytical tools (e.g. Google Analytics).

Familiarity with Survey Monkey, WordPress, and other content management systems.

Experience in Microsoft Suite applications and Google Workspace.

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including professional email etiquette.

Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships.

Strong planning and organizational skills, with an ability to prioritize daily tasks and long-term objectives.

Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, and willingness to learn new skills.

Flexible and adaptable, with an ability to switch between multiple priorities and work in a fast-paced environment.

Ability to work with and convey messages to different audiences.

Political and cultural sensitivity.

Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture is an asset.

 

Qualifications

Obtained or pursuing post-secondary education in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, or related field is preferred. Other relevant training and experience will be considered.

1-2 years of experience in a communications role. School or volunteer experience is valid experience.

 

Other Requirements

Availability to work Monday to Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.

Ability to work evenings and weekends, with notice.

Ability to travel throughout Alberta is a requirement.

Reliable transportation is required.

Acceptable attainment of a Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Check and an Intervention Record Check is required.
