Structural Steel Estimator

We are looking for a Structural Steel Estimator to prepare accurate, competitive bids for structural steel fabrication and related metalwork projects. This role supports commercial and mixed-use construction projects by reviewing drawings, performing takeoffs, pricing materials and labor, and helping position the company to win profitable work. The ideal candidate brings strong structural steel expertise, understands fabrication and erection workflows, and has experience working in a non-union environment. The company’s work includes structural steel, joist and decking, stairs and railings, and fabrication/erection services for projects in the greater Philadelphia region.

Responsibilities

• Review bid documents, structural drawings, specifications, and addenda for structural steel and miscellaneous metals projects

• Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for beams, columns, joists, decking, stairs, railings, embeds, and related steel components

• Develop accurate cost estimates for material, labor, fabrication, coatings, freight, and erection support as needed

• Solicit and analyze pricing from vendors and subcontractors to build complete and competitive proposals

• Identify scope gaps, exclusions, design conflicts, and risk factors before submission

• Coordinate with internal operations, detailing, fabrication, and field teams to align estimates with production capabilities

• Prepare proposals, clarifications, and bid qualifications for general contractors and construction partners

• Track bid opportunities, maintain estimating files, and support handoff of awarded projects to operations

• Help evaluate project fit based on schedule, scope complexity, labor strategy, and margin potential

• Contribute practical insight based on real-world structural steel means, methods, and non-union execution

Requirements:
• 3+ years of estimating experience in structural steel, miscellaneous metals, or steel fabrication

• Strong expertise in structural steel scope, including fabrication, erection, joists, decking, stairs, and railings

• Experience reading and interpreting structural and architectural drawings, shop requirements, and project specifications

• Ability to perform accurate takeoffs and build estimates for labor, material, and subcontracted scope

• Understanding of fabrication processes, field installation sequencing, and constructability considerations

• Prior experience working in a non-union company or non-union construction environment is required

• Strong commercial judgment with the ability to identify risk, clarify scope, and support profitable bidding decisions

• Proficiency with estimating software, spreadsheets, and standard construction documentation

• Organized communication style with the ability to work effectively with project managers, shop leadership, and field teams
