Job Description

Join the team bringing advanced autonomy to the built world

At Bedrock, we’re moving AI out of the lab and into the real world. Our team is composed of industry veterans who helped launch Waymo, scaled Segment to a $3.2B acquisition, and grew Uber Freight to $5B in revenue. Today, we’re deploying autonomous systems on heavy construction machinery across the country, accelerating project schedules of billion-dollar infrastructure projects and improving safety on job sites. Backed by $350M in funding, we’re working quickly to close the gap between America's surging demand for housing, data centers, manufacturing hubs, and the construction industry's growing labor shortage.

This is where algorithms meet steel-toed boots. You’ll collaborate with construction veterans and world-class engineers to solve physical-world problems that simulations can’t touch. If you're ready to apply cutting-edge technology to solve meaningful problems alongside a talented team—we'd love to have you join us.

About the Role

The Standards and Evaluations Lead is a key member of Bedrock Robotics’ Test Operations Team, responsible for owning and operating the self-certification program for excavator operators and field test specialists. Based in the Austin/Lockhart area, this person is the authoritative source for operator readiness standards, evaluation methodology, and certification recordkeeping. Starting as an individual contributor, this role will grow into a lead-level function as the certification program scales alongside our fleet and field testing operations.

Key Responsibilities

Certification Program Ownership

• Design, maintain, and continuously improve the self-certification framework for excavator operators and field test specialists.

• Define and document competency standards, evaluation criteria, and pass/fail thresholds for each certification tier.

• Manage certification records, expiration schedules, and renewal workflows to ensure full compliance across the team.

• Serve as the internal subject matter expert (SME) on operator qualification and safe operating procedures.

Evaluation and Testing

• Conduct hands-on field evaluations and practical assessments of operators and field test specialists.

• Develop written and practical exam materials that accurately reflect real-world operating conditions at the test site.

• Observe and score operator performance against standardized rubrics, providing detailed, actionable feedback.

• Identify skill gaps and work with operators to create targeted remediation plans.

Training & Onboarding Support

• Partner with operations and engineering teams to onboard new operators, ensuring certification readiness before unsupervised site access.

• Develop and maintain instructional materials, including operator handbooks, procedure guides, and reference cards.

• Facilitate classroom and field-based orientation sessions for new hires and refresher sessions for existing staff.

Standards Development and Compliance

• Translate relevant OSHA safety principles (as taught in OSHA 10/30), and manufacturer guidelines into site-specific operating standards and SOPs.

• Conduct periodic audits of operating practices on site and flag deviations from certified procedures.

• Support incident investigations by assessing whether operator error or certification gaps contributed to the event.

• Track industry standards and best practices to keep Bedrock’s certification program current and credible.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Coordinate with engineering, safety, and operations teams to align certification requirements with evolving test site protocols.

• Provide data-driven reporting on operator certification status, evaluation outcomes, and program health metrics to leadership.

• As the program matures, help define the team structure needed to scale evaluations across multiple operators and test sites.

Qualifications

Required

• 5+ years of hands-on experience operating heavy construction equipment, with a strong emphasis on excavators.

• Demonstrated experience developing or administering operator training, certification, or qualification programs.

• Deep working knowledge of excavator controls, safety systems, and site operating procedures.

• Must obtain OSHA 30 within 90 days of hire date - safety regulations and heavy equipment operator standards.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to document technical procedures clearly and concisely.

• Comfortable working in an active, fast-paced outdoor test environment with evolving priorities.

• Valid driver’s license and ability to work on-site in the Austin/Lockhart area full-time.

Preferred

• OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification.

• Experience working in a robotics, autonomous vehicle, or advanced technology field-testing environment.

• Prior experience developing or evaluating written exams and practical skills assessments.

• Proficiency with Google Workspace or Microsoft Office for documentation and reporting.

• Experience mentoring junior operators or acting in an informal leadership capacity.

What Success Looks Like

In the first 90 days, this person will have audited our current operator qualification process, identified gaps, and proposed a structured certification framework. Within six months, they will have delivered the first full cohort of certified operators through a documented, repeatable program. Within a year, they will own a living certification system that is trusted across engineering, safety, and operations — and they will be the go-to expert for any question about whether someone is qualified to operate equipment at our test site.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

• This is a full-time, on-site role based in the Austin/Lockhart area at Bedrock Robotics’ test site.

• Regular outdoor work in variable weather conditions is required.

• Candidates must be able to operate excavators and other heavy equipment as part of evaluation duties.

• Must be able to stand, walk, and work on uneven terrain for extended periods.

• Occasional travel to other Bedrock sites or training facilities may be required.

Our roles are often flexible. If you don't fit all the criteria, or are in another location (especially one where we have an office like SF or NY) please apply anyway! We'd love to consider you.
