Job description

Varjo is seeking a talented and passionate Staff Mixed Reality Engineer to join our growing team in Helsinki. In this strategic role, you will be responsible for pushing the boundaries of what is possible in XR by developing and implementing cutting-edge machine learning algorithms to enhance the visual quality and realism of our mixed reality experiences in real-time.

You will work closely with our world-class engineers and researchers, translating complex business challenges into elegant engineering solutions. This is a unique opportunity to lead critical projects, mentor a team of talented senior engineers, and play a key role in shaping the future of mixed reality.

This role is based in our Helsinki office with hybrid work options available. This role is eligible for relocation support.

What you’ll be doing

• Architect and lead the development of novel mixed reality features by strategically applying real-time machine learning models and techniques.
• Translate high-level business and product problems into concrete technical designs and engineering roadmaps.
• Provide technical guidance, coaching and mentorship to multiple engineers, fostering their growth and multiplying the team's impact.
• Design, develop, and optimize our high-throughput Mixed Reality CPU and GPU processing pipelines.
• Develop robust data pipelines to support the entire lifecycle of ML model development, from data collection to training and fine-tuning.

Our expectations

• Proven experience in applying machine learning to real-time image processing or image enhancement.
• Proven experience in at least one of the following domains:
• Deep expertise in real-time mixed reality pipelines, including working with camera sensors, ISPs, and software-side processing, coupled with a demonstrated ability to learn quickly.
• Extensive experience in developing and deploying real-time machine learning systems, with a strong passion for and ability to master new technical domains.

• Demonstrated ability to translate ambiguous business or product requirements into clear technical solutions and architectures.
• Experience in leading technical projects and mentoring senior engineers.
• Ability to deliver high-quality, production-level code; our codebase is primarily C++ with tooling in Python.
• A practical and stepwise approach to tackling complex problems.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in applying machine learning to real-time image processing. However, we encourage strong candidates with deep expertise in either real-time ML or real-time imaging pipelines to apply.
