Staff Backend Engineer

Boam AI builds managed data solutions that transform messy, unstructured signals from public, private, and proprietary sources into structured, reliable, and always up-to-date intelligence on millions of SMBs and enterprises worldwide. These agentic systems power CRMs, data warehouses, AI products, and mission-critical decisions across the enterprise.

As a Staff Backend Engineer, you will lead the technical direction of our Scala + Python data and agent infrastructure. You’ll own long-term architecture across multiple systems and scale both existing and greenfield services to keep our data fresh, our APIs fast, and customer workflows moving. This is a role for someone who wants to set the bar for technical excellence, mentor other engineers, and take responsibility for hard distributed systems problems with minimal safety nets and a small, senior team.

What You’ll Do

• Design and build resilient backend services and APIs

• Own high-level system architecture and major technical decisions across multiple systems

• Oversee critical data pipelines from ingestion to enrichment to delivery

• Architect systems for 100x data growth over the next three years

• Lead major cross-team initiatives and complex project delivery end to end

• Partner with ML leaders on model integration and agent architecture

• Build reliability and test coverage into the code itself with no separate QA layer

• Improve performance, scalability, and observability across our stack

• Mentor engineers through direction, feedback, and day-to-day support

• Raise the engineering bar through design reviews, pairing, and clear technical standards

• Optimize for real impact, customer outcomes, and fast iteration over theoretical perfection

• Use next-gen AI tools to improve code quality and velocity

You Might Be a Fit If...

• 8+ years building and operating complex, production backend systems

• Deep experience with high-throughput, large distributed systems

• Strong experience with Scala, Python, or functional / JVM languages

• Comfortable with distributed systems, data modeling, and high-volume pipelines

• History of providing technical coaching and direction to senior engineers

• Experience introducing new technologies and patterns across the team

• Enjoy greenfield work: from first principles design to deploy and monitoring

• Thrive without heavy process, QA buffers, or endless safeguards

• Ship, measure, refine over over-architecting, build foundations when needed

• Motivated by solving real user problems, not just abstract puzzles
