Position Description
We are seeking a Sr UI/UX Designer to lead the design of intuitive, efficient, and clinically meaningful user experiences for Carlsmed’s next-generation surgical planning platform.
This role will shape how surgeons, clinicians, case designers, and internal stakeholders interact with our software — from image-based surgical planning to data visualization, workflow automation, and case review.
You will work closely with surgeons, product owners, engineers, marketing, and regulatory partners to ensure every design supports safe, effective, and compliant clinical workflows while maintaining exceptional usability.
Key Responsibilities
User Research & Empathy: Conduct interviews, workflow studies, and contextual observations with surgeons, clinicians, case designers, and internal users to deeply understand goals, pain points, and constraints.
Workflow Design: Map end-to-end user journeys across the surgical-planning process (imaging, planning, review, manufacturing, post-op feedback) to define optimized digital experiences.
UI/UX Architecture: Design consistent, intuitive interfaces and interaction models for desktop and web applications that handle complex 2D/3D visualization and planning tasks.
Multi-User Experience: Create flexible UI patterns that accommodate different user personas and access levels — from surgeons and clinical specialists to business, marketing, and operations teams.
Prototyping & Validation: Develop low- to high-fidelity wireframes and interactive prototypes; plan and conduct usability testing with representative users to iterate on design effectiveness.
Design System & Standards: Contribute to or establish a scalable design system ensuring consistency, accessibility, and alignment with medical-device usability standards (e.g., IEC 62366, FDA Human Factors guidance).
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with software engineers, software solutions owners, and regulatory teams to ensure designs are feasible, implementable, and traceable within design controls.
Visual Communication: Present design concepts, user flows, and rationale to executives, cross-functional teams, and external stakeholders in a clear, engaging manner.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction, UX Design, Industrial Design, Computer Science, or a related field.
8+ years of experience in UI/UX design for complex applications — preferably in healthcare, medical devices, or 3D imaging platforms.
Proven experience designing workflow-intensive or data-rich interfaces (e.g., planning, visualization, or configuration tools).
Strong command of design and prototyping tools (Axor, Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, etc.).
Familiarity with usability engineering, risk mitigation, and traceability in regulated environments (IEC 62366, ISO 13485).
Understanding of user diversity — from technical operators to clinicians and business stakeholders.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills; able to balance user needs, business goals, and regulatory constraints.
