Position Overview
The Senior Director of Government Relations will lead the development and execution of a comprehensive state and local government affairs strategy to advance the mission of Communities In Schools of South Carolina. This role is responsible for elevating the CISSC brand among public sector stakeholders, strengthening strategic partnerships, and securing sustainable public funding to support the organization’s growth and long-term impact across the state. Working in close collaboration with the SVP, External Affairs, contract lobbyists, and the communications team, the Senior Director will design and implement a coordinated strategy that aligns with CISSC’s priorities to scale services and meet the increasing needs of students and communities throughout South Carolina.
Key Responsibilities
Government Relations Strategy & Execution
Develop and implement a statewide government relations strategy that advances CISSC’s policy and funding priorities.
Identify and pursue opportunities for public funding, including state appropriations, agency partnerships, and local government investments.
Ensure alignment between government relations efforts and the organization’s broader strategic plan for growth and program expansion.
Stakeholder Engagement & Advocacy
Serve as a primary liaison to state agencies, legislators, city and county officials, and school board leaders.
Build and maintain strong, credible relationships with elected officials and senior-level government stakeholders.
Represent CISSC in high-level meetings, coalitions, and public forums, effectively communicating organizational impact and priorities.
Funding & Sustainability
Lead efforts to secure critical public funding streams that support CISSC’s growth and long-term sustainability.
Develop strategies that leverage public funding to maximize private investment and overall organizational impact.
Monitor and report on funding outcomes, policy changes, and return on investment for government relations efforts.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner with the communications team to develop messaging, materials, and campaigns that elevate CISSC’s visibility and influence with policymakers.
Work closely with development and program teams to align funding strategies and articulate programmatic impact.
Support leadership in preparing for executive-level conversations, briefings, and presentations.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree in public administration, public policy, or related field preferred.
Minimum of 7–10 years of experience in government relations, public affairs, or related fields, preferably within the nonprofit or education sector.
Demonstrated success in securing public funding and influencing policy at the state and/or local level.
Strong understanding of South Carolina’s legislative and education landscape.
Experience working with contract lobbyists and managing external advocacy efforts.
Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage confidently at the executive level.
Proven ability to think strategically, manage multiple priorities, and drive results in a fast-paced environment.
