Salary Range: $18.75 - $19.50
The Greater Vallejo Recreation District is a Special Service District that has been serving area residents for over sixty years. As a Special Service District, GVRD operates as a separate government agency from the City of Vallejo. GVRD manages 407 acres of public park space including 20 neighborhood parks, 10 community parks, 6 special purpose parks, and Olympic-size swimming pool and 4 community centers. GVRD maintains over 1,000 acres of public land.
GVRD is governed by a five-member Board of Directors. With 30 plus full time and approximately 155 part-time and seasonal employees, GVRD operates on a 2025-2026 fiscal year budget of $12.9 million for general fund operations and Measure K funding amounting to $2.2 million. The Measure K funding is being utilized to purchase necessary equipment, improve parks, facilities.
JOB DESCRIPTION

DEFINITION
To maintain a safe and enjoyable sport gym program for all ages, to lead sports and recreation activities, and to perform a variety of tasks in support of an after school or summer sports program.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives immediate supervision from higher level staff. Assists with supervising the day to day operations of the gym.
ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS-Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Essential Functions:
Implement and supervise various recreational activities, including sports, crafts, games, and field trips.
May collect monthly fees, issue receipts, maintain record of enrollment and fees paid.
Lead recreational activities, supervise children, enforce safety rules and guidelines.
Resolve conflicts among children an adults.
Monitor activities within a facility and/or outside, provide information to the public on program activities.
Respond to parent, school, or community concerns and issues, direct to higher level staff as necessary.
Perform first aid as necessary.
Assist higher level staff with attendance tracking, incident reports, and other routine program documentation.
Assist with the day to day supervision of gym operations, including monitoring activity areas, equipment use, and overall program flow.
Provide guidance and support to part time staff and volunteers, help model appropriate behavior management and activity leadership.
Help set up, organize, and put away sports equipment and program materials, report damaged equipment or safety concerns to higher level staff.
Marginal Functions:
Assist in the general cleaning and upkeep of facilities.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Train new Recreation Leaders assigned to site.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
General recreation principles and practices.
Rules and regulations of age-appropriate recreation activities.
Basic art and craft techniques, games, and sports.
Procedures of record keeping
Basic mathematical principles.
English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Ability to:
Learn recreation activities, rules and regulations.
Respond to requests and inquires from the general public.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Use recreation software system.
Attend meetings and in service trainings related to work.
Experience and Education Guidelines: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Two years of increasingly responsible experience in recreation programs or a childcare setting.
Education:
Completion of High School or equivalent; college coursework is preferred.
License or Certificate
Possession of a valid California Driver License.
C.P.R. and First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain within six months of hire date.
Special Requirement:
May be required to pass TB test depending on assignment.
Minimum age (dependent on program):
Must be at least 18 years of age to apply.

Indoor and outdoor facilities; exposure to noise, dust, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions; working with young children, teenagers, and clients with special needs.
Physical Demands:
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for occasional moderate or light lifting; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling; walking for prolonged periods of time; standing for prolonged periods of time.
